you didn't enjoy huysmans' writing? Sorry to hear. I found it beautiful and it was the first inventory novel.

well, murphy was the last beckett work that was inspired somewhat by joyce. if you want pure beckett, how it is, watt, or the malloy trilogy is what you read. the nohow on trilogy too. i must say, murphy is definitely his most accessible novel, besides mercierr & cormier, but if you can drag yourself through the malloy trilogy you would get pure beckett at his finest form.

guys like Huysmans make oscar wilde nearly irrelevant to me. picture of dorian gray is cool and all, but compared to Against Nature, or The Damned, just on artistic merit alone, it looks silly if you ask me.

Werckmeister is amazing, but so are Satantango and Damnation! Yeah I've probably seen Solaris 3 times, The Mirror 6 or so, and Stalker twice. Those three tarky films are the logical conclusion to cinema as art for me.

Honestly, I try to do nothing else in my spare time. Literature outraced music and film as my main interest not too long ago. I saw Swans two years ago, and again a couple months ago. I am driving two hours to see them next weekend again.

my friend is currently reading In Search of Lost Time and it is quite the commitment indeed. though could be perfect if you have the summer off. i have winters off work so that's when i shut myself in and read all the difficult and supremely long novels. Proust would count as extra-supremely share-size long.

finished up Sentimental Education by Flaubert and am now fully consumed by Italo Calvino's If on a winter night a Traveler. Since you are reading Joyce, I may throw in Dubliners by him afterwards before I move on to Under The Volcano.

Conóceme

Pittsburgh, Pa

“There is something sad about people going to bed. You can see they don’t give a damn whether they’re getting what they want out of life or not, you can see they don’t ever try to understand what we’re here for. They just don’t care. Americans or not, they sleep no matter what, they’re bloated mollusks, no sensibility, no trouble with their conscience.
I’d seen too many troubling things to be easy in my mind. I knew too much and not enough. I’d better go out, I said to myself, I’d better go out again. Maybe I’ll meet Robinson. Naturally that was an idiotic idea, but I dreamed it up as an excuse for going out again, because no matter how I tossed and turned on my narrow bed, I couldn’t snatch the tiniest scrap of sleep. Even masturbation, at times like that, provides neither comfort nor entertainment. Then you're really in despair.”
