• Post punk - deconstruct and reconstruct music

    24 Sep 2007, 10:18

I've started a blog dedicated to the world of music. It's called "post punk - deconstruct and reconstruct music" and you can find it at http://www.postpunk.rachelapp.co.uk/.

I cover both old school bands like The Raincoats and Gang of Four as well as post punk influenced bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Re-TROS.
  • Touring Europe & learning languages

    20 Sep 2007, 17:10

Three weeks ago, a friend of mine who happens to be a gig promoter in the Netherlands and upon hearing my song Manager kindly offered to set up a tour there for me.

That's all the encouragement i needed to tour Europe and here i am, setting up further dates in Belgium, France and possibly Germany.

It is so exciting and i have decided to try and learn a few of the local languages (i already speak french so i don't need to learn that one!). Well, basically dutch and german. Though i'm thinking i should perhaps focus on one only? And if i do so, which one?

It's been years since i've tried to learn a foreign languages and i have sometimes been successful (english is now my first language but used to be a foreign language to me) and not so successful (russian - i don't even remember how to introduce myself!).

    So wish me luck!
  • New track "the whole way" uploaded

    1 Sep 2007, 10:25

I've uploaded a new track called The Whole Way.

Unlike my previous tracks, it's kind of gloomy and dark, as the theme is the destruction of our planet.

Check it out and let me know what you think;-)
  • New track "you wanna be a man" uploaded

    5 Ago 2007, 16:06

I'm also working on a video for Manager, it should be finished in a couple of weeks...
  • My new music

    9 Jul 2007, 18:58

I've started recording again, under the name of Nat JM now.

So far, my stuff has been compared to The Slits, The Raincoats, Young Marble Giants, and Sleater Kinney. Sounds all good to me :-)

Why the change from RachelAPP to Nat JM?

Well, RachelAPP was always a name i was hiding behind, as my real name is Natalie - and the good news is i don't need a name to hide behind anymore ;-)

  • Recording of "Chaos" (part 1)

    5 Ene 2007, 21:31

What can i say, except that today isn't my day?

I was off work today, and, among other things, i wanted to record vocals for my song "Chaos". Since yesterday, i've been suffering from a sore throat and despite taking lozenges and loads of herbal tea with honey, i woke up feeling worse for wear. Not only i still had a sore throat, but i had a headache as well, and my neck was very stiff. All the signs of flu :-(

At about midday, i got a rush of energy, set up the mic, and did 4 vocal takes. My voice started to falter on the 4th take but luckily, the 2nd take was good enough to be used. Things were looking up :-)

I spent one hour editing the track, along with the background tracks i had recorded just before Xmas (drum machine, bass + 2 guitar tracks). I did a rough mix then had some lunch. There was a strange smell in my bedroom - i got a bit worried but it seemed to go away after half an hour so i forgot about it. Against all expectations, my energy levels spiralled down and i fell asleep on my bed at about 3ish... not waking up until 6! :o)

After spending a couple of hours trying to sort out various things in the flat - none of them working - i decided to listen to the song again and perhaps record a synth line for it. I fired up Cubase, switched on my keyboard, set up a new stereo track in Cubase, hit the key... no sound came out :-(

Turned out my mixer, into which i plug my instruments and send the output to my computer, didn't want to power on. I changed the adapter and still no power. Remember the smell? Yep, that came from there, in fact from a couple of knobs - something must have burnt underneath

As making music without my mixer is as fun as plugging and unplugging things a thousand times, i went to my favourite online music shop and bought a new one. In fact, i got a smaller one as i've only ever used about half of the channels of my current one. If i want to record that synth line this week-end, i'm going to have to work out how to plug my keyboard into my soundcard (i'm not sure i have the right cables).

As for now, i need to chill out and there's nothing like TV to make you forget about your problems... except that we still have no reception (that was one of the things i hoped to sort out this afternoon but it went wrong). I have a headache so i can't read. I'd go to bed now but my girlfriend will be back home soon and will doubtless wake me up and chatter, as she's getting drunk in pub right now. Damn, i'm not having a good day! But as they say, things can only get better :-)

The only thing that can make me feel better is to listen to PJ Harvey :-))

  • A few cool music news... post punk female bands, The Gossip, Cat On The Wall, The…

    13 Dic 2006, 9:06

The news below are taken from my daily blog for Let Your Thoughts Explode Webzine. You can view the full blog at http://lytez.blogspot.com/

Mark from www.boingboing.net has compiled a list of 8 punk and post-punk female bands videos http://www.boingboing.net/2006/11/15/8_punk_and_postpunk_.html From Joan Jett to the X Ray Spex, it presents a slice of history too easily forgotten from the official punk books.

Exciting indie band The Gossip have got a new video, for the song "Jealous girl", on their MySpace page. Check it out at http://www.myspace.com/gossipband I particularly like the close-up on the guitar - Brace has got such a wicked way of strumming!

Cat on the wall is a new music webzine. Well, not strictly new as the people running it used to run "Funky Mofo". Anyway, the launch is for early 2007. Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/catonthewallwebzine

Fans of The Organ, a canadian all-female indie/alternative quintet, will be disappointed to learn that they have announced their split. http://www.myspace.com/theorgan
