  • Soramimi group dead... + Lulululu Army Live, the second night

    23 Jul 2007, 15:34

It's so sad, because the Soramimi Hour group I started has been demolished....I know, there are certain non-Japanese people who takes interest in that segment, but they may be minority so far. After all, this subject is still politically (phonetically?) incorrect for most pop fans...Look at Alexisonfire's Myspace! A lot of fans are ranting about the soramimi skit featuring their music, while a handful of Japanese fans quietly defending.

Anyway, this is the Soramimi in question...."Your mail's not safe in this town" turns into "Yome busaiku deshita" (The bride was ugly). They are laughing at the child's attitude, not the song. And Kaela Kimura likes it so much! Her recommendation led to the presentation of year-end "Soramimi Award"....but sadly, Alexisonfire themselves was not awarded. (Though in the early days, Gipsy Kings has been presented some kind of statue by the TV station.)

On the other hand, Lulululu army's 10th anniversary live special came to the second night on July 17. Because of the rain (and the day being first working day after continuing Sunday/holidays), the audience were sporadic, but they nonetheless enjoyed the show. here is the digest movie from YouTube:

In order of appearance: 76477, ハルカゼ (halcaze), coquette sure jasmin & lele et moi.

The third night will be held at Akasaka NOTE, with the acts Ogawa Sakana, Fooling, Maa Chan and the most recommended: the twin-sisters from northern town Hakodate, Kefi. Look for their breezy, lovely recorder sound!

  • Soramimi hour: For starters.....

    12 May 2007, 10:25

This is my first journal, and it introduces the "Soramimi Hour" group I created. Starting in 1992, "Soramimi Hour" segment from TV show "Tamori Club" features skits based on certain parts of foreign songs that sound like Japanese phrase.

Here are some of the classic Soramimi clips you can see at YouTube. Man with the shades is Tamori, host of the long-running program (Who also hosts "Warrate Iitomo" for 25 years every weekday!). The long haired guy on the left is Hajime Anzai, the illustrator who co-host the segment as "Soramimist". The contents of each skit are "found" and posted by viewers, while staff at the production company (exact English spelling of its name is uncomfirmed, but pronounced "How-fulus") visualize them.

Filippa Giordano - Casta Diva. The older woman is having hemorrhoids, and when a guy gives her a seat, she shouts with pain. The Italian "A Noi Volgi" becames "Ano Iboji" (That hemorrhoids!)

Prince - Batdance. A package of milk manufactured under the supervision of Japanese Agricultural Association emerges, with the shout "Nokyo Gyunyu". Actually saying "Don't stop dancing", but what happened?

Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal. The random bursting of Jacko mutter translated here as "Pan!" (A piece of bread), "Cha" (Japanese Tea) and "Shukuchoku" (Night Duty).

Metallica - Blackened. James and the crew warns to hurry fire extinguishing on this one. "Blackened is the end, winter it will send" becomes "Bucket relay, mizu yokose" (Relay the buckets, pass the water fast!)

TLC - Whispering Playa - Interlude. A drunken guy is telling the older passers-by randomly, "Ossan, ossan, ossan ka? Ossan" while spotted by younger "Ganguro" girls and told "Eh, jibun da to omou" (The older guy is yourself, I think).

And there's more! Please search YouTube for "Soramimi" or "空耳". This segment is now in 16th year!
