Hayi WemaJongosi
Hey, young warriors
Jongosi is derived from an Afrikaans phrase, literally meaning "a young powerful ox" and used to designate a particularly feisty and lively person. This track is a tribute to young sportsmen and women who are able to perform at their highest level under pressure.
I guess the Ox can be seen as a power symbol similar to what the Lion is to England.
An Ox is also very significant in the African Culture as it used to be a way of trading. Your wealth was determined by the amount of Ox you owned.
"Lobola" is given as payment to the parents of the bride. Now-a-days it's more like R20 000, depending on how wealthy the prospective husband is.
The Afrikaans language has taken many idioms from the significance of the ox: The memory of an ox or an elephant. And the old English one: As strong as an ox.
