hey man. do you know what the 5 best jazz LPs released so far this year are? or top 3 or whatever. realised i basically know nothing about the scene these days apart from listening to the occasional mary halvorson or pete evans release. (only ask cos i noticed you're also going to see brotzmann / noble / tippett in a couple of weeks as well)

Hi! Yes I'm grabbing that one as soon as I get paid. The new material has no Daniel, so is kind of an unknown quantity... I see you're going to MtM in April too; gimme a shout if you want to hang out.

Well on the forum I put myself down as Riffwraith, but I post on there even less than I do around here! Joined the BLM group, had such an awesome weekend, July 2013 is looking too far away. Any favourite moments? And no, if Robert Wyatt were to play the next one I would have no idea. Gotta be sorting that out

I'm talking to myself again, but the list of 2011 records has now been updated – though the reviews are still awaiting the attention of Britain’s finest procrastinator: http://www.last.fm/user/MrMoochoo31/journal/2012/01/06/59xowd_the_old_baker%E2%80%99s_dozen%3A_the_finest_records_of_2011

Y'know what? i haven't, but it's now part of a backlog of stuff i have to listen to, but rarely seem to find the time. Only just started on that bloody Sufjan Stevens. Ta for the heads-up though, feel free to fling any others my way. Nice hat btw.

you only need about 8 perfect music sets to have a fantastic weekend. all the rest of the good stuff is in the film & music arena, really.

  • yayforelmo

the line-up is shite, obviously. hopefully it will be good eventually though. there's no reason in the world that they can't book battles, jens lekman, flying lotus and all the good stuff and it would be the best festival in the world. i am still using the internet a bit but mainly just to stream records whilst i do past papers. only 11.5 weeks until my last exam.

Hello! Thank you for both videos, the first remembers me David DMX, a kinf of old rap style lost in some alley, and the images make a nice structure no-dream. The second video, remembers me The Wicker Man, hahahaha...why?, it´s very dramatic the manner of singing. I like more the first... And maybe, for this day, it´ll happen some "espectacular". 2007 was my first year camping, and have been ever since on the saturday. 2008 had the best line up in my opinion, with so much going on, and then since then.. well it just hasn't been as good. Last year there were not as many acts 'to give people more time'. So, for Florence then Melvin? I don't care if I don't like the headliners this year, it would just show it isn't mainstream, which it isn't yet. And no problem, I could tell you needed to release your feelings.

i'll be leaving it i guess. christmas and that coming up and i can't really afford any of them + travelling etc. if i would go to any it would be 'last chance disco' as that is on the friday night and my current thinking is that that's their best BUT skinny grin is also really cool and i'd totally love to see Road Of Bones live.

Hi Simon, thanks for the brief message the other day, I agree with your outburst entirely. Are you on another forum sabbatical at the moment or something? Please say you'll be returning in time for the end of year list threads. I still need to listen to your latest mix cd actually, I must get round to doing that soon and providing you with some feedback.

Thoughts on The Age Of Adz? I think it's really fantastics, the Fantasia strings over everything are brilliant and I'm fairly sure Impossible Soul is already one of the finest pieces of music ever recorded

Fantastic - I particularly love Ocean Songs. I often sit in astonishment at the sounds from Warren's violin. I will look out for the review. I can only assume that it was a great evening. They are such consummate performers.

Hello Simon - I saw your short review of Grinderman2 and took a quick look at your library - some great artists there (and it prompted me to dig out some C93 again) but I couldn't help but notice that Dirty Three are missing. Please don't neglect Warren's great band. They are also fantastic live.

For The Ghosts Within is quite disappointing. Probably the worst album both Wyatt and Atzmon have been involved in.

    Septiembre 2010
  • yayforelmo

I am now the proud owner of a copy of For The Ghosts Within (for reviewing purposes of course). Gonna listen to it on the way to school tomorrow and report back. What do you think of False Priest by the way? I've been listening to little else the past week, to be honest. It feels like no other of Montreal album but sounds quite definitely like an of Montreal album. I guess that's the genius of that band really, the amount of versatility within their sound... already had about 10 different favourite tracks from it. How good is the production!?

Thanks for the reply/friend request. We do have Super musical compatibility after all. I haven't been into Cave for too long - maybe six months - but then my musical journey as is has only lasted a few years. Despite my brevity of knowledge of him, he soon catapulted himself to the peak of my favourite musicians, and there's so much of his stuff out there to get your teeth into. Have you heard the 'Heathen Child' bside 'Star Charmer'? An acoustic guitar-led ballad with embellishments of violin. Could've come straight off 'the Boatman's Call'. I'm pleased that our man has kept in touch with his mellow side despite his remarkably wild current outlet. Yeah, maybe I was too quick to cast 'Worm Tamer' as similar to 'Palaces...' and 'When My Baby Comes', but it's little things like the backing vocals which I definitely think have a wistful quality. Unconventionally wistful, sure, but it's there. And you're right, the song does (mainly) rock out.

    Septiembre 2010
  • yeoldebard

Loved your recent appraisal of the second Grinderman record. As a huge fan of Cave's softer side, I was pleasantly surprised to find that tracks like 'When My Baby Comes', 'Worm Tamer' and 'Palaces of Montezuma' were so wistfully beautiful. I'm also on my third play (although you'll doubtless have progressed from there by now) and I can't wait to listen to it more!

    Septiembre 2010
  • yayforelmo

Probably not worth bothering with, i stopped using it a few months back. the 'number of tracks per month' isn't a very good system as it forces you to buy a load of short albums instead of a couple of longer ones (i.e. I wanted to get Gonjasufi but as it's 30 tracks it would cost me the whole months worth of credits whereas I could get 4 jazz/post-rock albums for the same price). their catalogue really isn't as big as they like to think and new releases can take months to come in and seemingly randomly.

Look what the headliner for this gig is: http://www.scala-london.co.uk/scala/event.php?id=1417 "Robert Wyatt album launch". I keep emailing them to try and find out if he's going to be playing but it's all a bit quiet. annoying me.

I'm really enjoying Sir Luscious Left Foot at the moment but am not 100% convinced by it - though the singles from it are amongst the finest this year especially Shine Blockas. I prefer most of the Outkast albums, anyway, but I guess everyone does. Now that's a band that should headline Latitude!
