http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Zq32OmDO3YBy David PescovitzMy favorite band of the 1990s (one of my favorite bands ever, in fact), the Afghan Whigs, will perform for the first time in more than a decade next year at the All Tomorrow's Parties festivals in London (5/25-5/27) and Asbury Park, New Jersey (9/21-9/23). Whigs frontman Greg Dulli is curating the Asbury Park lineup. The Afghan Whigs mean a great deal to me as I "grew up" with them in Cincinnati, Ohio, when I was covering the local music science for the alt.weekly paper there. Also, the first article I ever wrote for a national magazine was a profile of the Whigs for Alternative Press back in 1992. I most recently hung out with bass player John Curley over the summer at his Ultrasuede Studio. He and my son played a rousing rendition of the Whigs' classic "Somethin' Hot." My son sang. He is 5 years old. A recording of that session is locked in the vaults for some future box set, but in the meantime, above is the tune as the Whigs played it back in 1998.
