The Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter
This is exactly the kind of 'let's go back to nature, plant flowers and knit socks' kind of hippie folk music I try to avoid at all cost. No, wait, it's got a psychedelic nature. But as far as I'm concerned that's just knitting sweaters on drugs instead of on tea.
I have to admit: the first song Koeeoaddi There has something really hypnotizing and A Very Cellular Song has some interesting melodies. (All songs have more than one melody… it's psychedelic). And maybe The Minotaur's Song is not that bad either. But that's it. The rest of the album annoys me to death. It's probably no surprise the best songs are in the beginning of the album when I'm still giving it a try.
Apparently this band influenced a lot of people (amongst others The Rolling Stones) and I am sure a fan base can be found that adores this kind of music but the desire I get when I listen to this music to want to stuff all their exotic instruments (gimbris, penny whistles, pan pipes, mandolines, Jew's harps, chahanais, harpsichords and water harps) in their behinds if that could only make this music a bit less whining and with a little more rhythm, suggests this is not really MY cup of tea. Sorry!
