The BeatlesA Hard Day's Night

A new year, a new Beatles album! An album that begins with the only hit on it: (yes, indeed) A Hard Day's Night. It is strange (or no, rather logical) that the best songs on albums are often the first ones. If you'd make a playlist with all first songs of albums, you would have a great playlist.
But back to the point.

At first, this album doesn't seem very special. After A Hard Day's Night, the songs all sound rather calm. This album is less 'rough' than the previous one, and way smoother and unoriginal than the ones to come. But, but, but!

After several listenings, most of the songs turn out quite well. Although there appears to be only one theme (Love! Love! Love!... Who can blame them?), John Lennon and Paul McCartney prove their talent of songwriting. Sounding sometimes deceivingly simple, these songs (well, most of them) really stick in your mind. Examples? I'm Happy Just to Dance with You: sticky melody, And I Love Her: sooo romantic (it's the 'And' in the song lyric that does the trick), the typical Beatles rock in Can't Buy Me Love (quite the opposite of Money on their previous album, haha), Anytime at All: another sticky melody, Things We Said Today: wow, what a song! The way they sing together, the perfect transitions between different parts, the guitar sound... I find this the best song on this album by far. And then there is You Can't Do That: this song has the best lyrics of them all, haha:

Well, it's the second time I've caught you talking to him,
Do I have to tell you one more time, I think it's a sin,
I think I'll let you down.
Let you down and leave you flat,
Gonna let you down and leave you flat,
Because I've told you before, oh,
You can't do that.

This is definitely not the best Beatles album, With The Beatles was already better. However, it is very enjoyable music. You wouldn't expect less of the Beatles of course. And it got me quite curious about the movie too!

(Nog eens nog eens nog eens: A Hard Day's Night, And I Love Her, Things We Said Today)
