Tue 14 Aug – Marina & the Diamonds, MS MR
Waayyyyyyy back in April, U.S. dates were announced and my mother bought tickets for me as a birthday present! I can happily say: best birthday present ever. Sweet 16 it was.

So, after a very confusing drive through D.C. we finally got to the club. It was a little after seven, doors opened at seven, so we were pretty OK. Lots of hipsters! It was actually a pretty diverse crowd age-wise, though. It ranged from middle aged to what looks like a seven year-old Marina stan who dragged her dad with her to the concert! She was so cute and stood right in front of me.

Anyway, back on track here. The line was surprisingly long, but I got in much more quickly than expected. I’ve never been to this club before, so after I stood in line to buy my Marina shirt and my MS MR shirt, I checked out the bottom floor and balconies. Bottom floor was OK, but A) I was not willing to stand the entire time while waiting for MS MR and Marina, and B) the aerial view was actually super cool and unique! So I settled for the left balcony. As bubblegum pop and Garbage blasted from the speakers (everyone sang along to Selena’s Love You Like a Love Song of course), some older girls settled in near us and so did the aforementioned dad and kid set. Saying it again: very cute! It was until near an hour and half later at around 8:30 that MS MR finally came on.

Let me say this: their set was amazing! Their records aren’t amazingly produced, so it’s hard to grasp how powerful some of their songs are in MP3s, but their live playing is absolutely phenomenal. I admit that I only knew all the words to Bones and Hurricane, but I was probably one of very few in the audience! The live drummer added so much, along with the female singer’s (where can I find their name?) powerful vocals. Bones, their opener, is the perfect example of this. Hurricane, first single and final song played, was great live, they did a cool breakdown thing at the end that added much-appreciated intensity. The only thing I didn’t like about their performance was the pointless profanity while they were speaking to the audience, but this seems to be a common theme with opening acts. When their half hour portion of the show was over with they cheered for Marina and humbly left the stage. I’ve had Hurricane since its release and am definitely looking forward to new released from them.

Then, came some more waiting. The concert was scheduled to end at 10 PM, but didn’t actually end until a quarter after eleven. That should be pretty indicative of Marina’s tardiness, but then again, I can’t say I’ve ever been to a show where the main act wasn’t fashionably late. The playlist from earlier repeated (it’s available at Spotify if you’d like to listen), and when Selena Gomez ended, Marina came on stage.

Her setlist was the standard US fare; a favourite track of mine, Living Dead, was replaced with Hypocrates as it has been (this is because Living Dead isn’t on the US version of Electra Heart, I presume). I wish she had more time at the piano; only Obsessions, Numb, and Teen Idle were performed with Marina at her keyboard. Still, you can’t deny that she is absolutely terrific at exciting a crowd. When she says jump, we ask “How high?”. Especially during Hollywood.

Eventually, the main portion of the concert came to a close with How to be a Heartbreaker. Marina bowed alongside her band (her drummer in particular was pretty enthusiastic), and as the lights came on the audience started exiting the stage in droves.

I came out of the venue and immediately started looking for where all of the Marina fans were lining up. Admittedly, it…took me awhile. I waited by the bus, then by the entrance, and then finally figured out that everyone was waiting in the alley. I’m not the best with these things! As I walked back down the alley where I entered the venue, I noticed that the line was nearly as long as when I was waiting to get inside! I was worried for awhile Marina might not come out after all, just because of how large the line was. Still, folks from Tumblr assured me she would so I stayed put. I had some (teen) idle conversation with my brother and sang along with Disco Moment by Bright Light Bright Light, which I heard coming from someone’s phone behind me. Eventually, the security guards came and told us very specifically that Marina would NOT come out unless we ordered ourselves in a single file line! I doubted this, but followed suit. Truthfully, I was just glad she decided to come out after all. Glad, and very nervous. Who wouldn’t get nervous with such perfection in such a close vicinity?

As I have said many times before, there were truckloads (OK, maybe one or two truckloads) of people waiting for Marina. I suspect this is the reason no pictures were allowed to be taken with her. I only brought my camera for this purpose, so I was pretty disappointed at first. Then I realized that I did indeed buy a Marina t-shirt! So, I decided to have her sign that. I was also worried for a bit that I didn’t have anything for Marina to sign it with, but I would find out later that she had a sharpie pen (yes, I am VERY dumb).

And finally, everything that night amounted to this one moment. The one I had anticipated when I entered the line five hours earlier. Meeting Marina. Admittedly it was not much of a meeting, but I don’t think I would have been mentally stable if it was. As she came down the line, my heart started beating uncontrollably fast. I couldn’t believe (I still can’t believe) that she was coming down that line, inevitably to see me! But she did. My brother got his ticket signed, and I held out my shirt to be signed. Did I say I was nervous as all heck? Because I was. I stammered that I was sorry (I suppose because I didn’t have a hard surface for her to sign the t-shirt on), and she replied in her heavenly Welsh voice that it was alright. I think I died there and this is just my ghost writing my last passionate words. Whatever the case, I (or ghost me) said thank you seemingly to the ground and she said, of course, in her heavenly Welsh voice, “Your welcome”. If I didn’t die earlier, I am sure I died in the next few seconds when I finally worked up the courage to steal a glance at her impossibly beautiful face. Just thinking about it is mind-blowing. This is the women I have seen every day in pictures and videos for years! Why should this be different? But it was. And it is. It really, truly is and I am so glad and grateful to have met her.

And that mostly concludes my night! After that my mother drove me and my brother and my little sister (who I suppose hopped along for the ride) back to Virginia. It sounds so weird when I say it like that, like all of that is over forever, but I still feel those moments in my heart (how sappy can I get?). Let me say it again. I am unbelievably grateful to my mother and Marina and whatever higher powers there are in the universe for letting me have this night, these moments. I hope they last forever.
  • How varied is your music taste?

    30 Abr 2011, 9:53

Yeah, one of these things. I'm such a tool. I expect no more than an 8, although Last.fm's similar artists make no sense for pop. OH, THIS PERSON IS ALSO POPULAR, SO SHE MUST BE SIMILAR. No, that's not how it works. My top 20 played artist also doesn't accurately represent my favourite artists, although honestly I probably couldn't name my top 20 otherwise. Oh well.

A strikethrough denotes the artist has already appeared in the list and will not be counted again. Also, I will skip "similar artists" that are just the original artists doing collabs or remixes.

First, make a list of your overall top-20 artists. Then, for each of these artists, add the 7 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, add up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.
