thanks, brian, i enjoyed reading that (and like that you seem to enjoy writing so much; i envy your enthusiasm). most of that i have not heard, and those i don't have already at least are on my radar. i don't feel it's necessary to hear a release the year it comes out because quality music will continue to be talked about, as you've done, so people will keep discovering, and maybe the perfect time for them to get into it is in the future. i liked chance's mixtape and appreciated how it was so out of the norm in some ways, but i need to hear it again. despite my shout last year about picking up hard copies of popular, if only underground, regionally, or to the old school, hip-hop albums, i think 2013 was the year i listened to the least hip-hop since i was 14. i was just on (a lot of) other wavelengths for the most part and still am now. funnily enough, 'hell on earth' was one of those rap albums i did listen to a lot and agree is incredible.

honestly i'm still having too much fun listening to albums from 2012 and older. i did end up listening to that chance the rapper mixtape, however. my favorite album from last year was nine inch nails' 'hesitation marks,' but of what i've heard so far my other favorites were (related group) how to destroy angels' 'welcome oblivion,' atoms for peace's 'amok,' justin timberlake's 'the 20/20 experience' first volume only, autechre's 'exai,' and boards of canada's 'tomorrow's harvest.' how about you? i think i saw a list of yours recently, and i agree that 2012 was better, but the year of release is mattering less and less to me. each release year seems stronger to me as time goes by and i hear more albums from that year or just spend more time listening to them.

with regard to your asking about where to explore in sun ra's vast discography, some guidance from one of bjork's major early collaborators in this radio discussion and music set: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03930k0

very cool, brian, i enjoyed reading that and also get annoyed when people fetishize '90s hip-hop. my favorites are mostly covered http://www.last.fm/user/howisya/journal/2010/01/02/3axpr9_my_top_50_favorite_albums_of_the_decade_2000-2009 - some others include: Diverse - One A.M., Antipop Consortium - Fluorescent Black, cLOUDDEAD self-titled, Boom Bip & Dose One - Circle, Themselves - TheFREEhoudini (complete version), Invincible - ShapeShifters, Shabazz Palaces - Black Up, Mos Def - The Ecstatic, Two Fingers self-titled featuring UK MC Sway throughout, DJ Krush - Zen, all of the DJ Shadow albums, OKP imcvspl's album iPL - The Catalyst, and DJ Quik & Kurupt - BlaQKout. i do like that edan album, too. i'll never forget how he stole the show in his hometown opening for prefuse 73. little known fact: el-p almost had a production placement on mobb deep's 'juvenile hell.' anyhow, thanks for sharing, and keep writing. i'm about to "share" an album through here with you; i'll leave a note.

That's one genre I've been meaning to look up (been hooked on that since listening to Gaslamp Killer mixes). Have any starting recommendations?

"underground" wasn't the right word, but i meant rap albums only genre fans really care about (now anyway), and "regional" or "cult" felt dismissive. dj quik 'rhythm-al-ism': not my first quik album (my 3rd), but the first time i remember hearing him was "hand in hand" (do you remember the cable channel the box? they used to run that video when it was new, and it was always so catchy but so silly to me back then, but now i can hear how talented quik is as a producer and can better appreciate him as a rapper), so my getting this album had been a long time coming; scarface 'the fix' (half of it wasn't new to me, but hearing it as a full album was); jeru the damaja 'the sun rises in the east'; eric b. & rakim 'don't sweat the technique'; among others. none of them cost me more than $10 either. i'm finding good deals but also trying to pick up albums before they go out of print.

i have the kweli album and chance mixtape but haven't listened yet (likewise the new ghostface). for '60s rock, check out the poppy family and buffalo springfield (i can vouch for all 3 albums) if you haven't. i'm with you, it's just more fun not to restrict oneself to new releases. i'm even picking up some underground rap classics from the '90s and early '00s that i was always curious about but never heard all of until now.

i'm still listening to releases from 2012 (and older), but as far as 2013 releases, i like the new ones from bilal, atoms for peace, how to destroy angels, justin timberlake, my bloody valentine, autechre, and the sound city soundtrack. i'm not disappointed with this year so far, but i still continue to focus on music overall rather than just new music.

"La gente necesita la música, curarse con algo feliz, que se eleve por encima de la miseria humana. La música es eso, ese es el anhelo de la poesía y la lírica. La letra de una canción, ¡tiene que ser hermosa! Decir algo que llegue al alma de la gente, que llegue a su corazón y le saque la mierda de dentro. Ese es mi intento"-Luis Alberto Spinetta. QDEP
