  • Performance & Cocktails serves up a few cocktails of it's very own!

    19 Oct 2010, 21:53

    Mon 18 Oct – Performance & Cocktails + B-Sides Show

It's hard now to name any good solid rock bands from the early nighties or from that whole 20th century period. Oasis - gone, Blur - a blur, Supergrass - who? but no one seems to talk about these rocking Welsh lads who have brought us hits such as "Dakota", "Just Looking", "Bartender & The Thief" the list goes on and on..

So when the opportunity arose to see these "old timers" in concert at the good ol' Hammersmith Apollo, I quickly did not hesitate into paying £30 to see this truly under-rated and fine band in concert.

However, this was a performance by the band only playing the songs from their 1999 album Performances & Cocktails. So, after getting down to my local HMV, paying my £8 for the album and uploading all the songs to iTunes I just sat back, turned up and listened to the album. The album, I must say before I get into the actual performance itself is a fine album and a great first album for any "new-listeners" to this band it has some good rocking tunes such as Roll Up and Shine and then a nice "anthem like" ending with I Stopped to Fill My Car Up... fabulous album...

Right the concert! back on track now, well obviously this was a performance from the album so obviously the set list showed no signs of surprises... to start were two of the most incredible openings to any act - Roll Up and Shine & The Bartender & The Thief... the crowd went nuts! Got pushed, jumped around, threw my hands in the air and had a bottle thrown over me... 6 minutes in and I was already hooked in for an incredible night...

Then Kelly (the front-man of the group) would take it slow with his acoustic.. the crowd singing along like any other devoted fans of the band they are seeing perform... then all of a sudden Pick A Part That's New kicked in... the catchy chorus drew everyone in for a great moment of the night! But the best is yet to come..

Just Looking my overall favorite song from the group EVER then came into part again I am looking at my watch and it's only 20 past 9?! Unbelievable a band i am seeing for the first time and they have drawn me in completely to their music... it then slowed down a bit/I didn't remember the words/I was sweating so much I needed some water and eventually it got to 10 o'clock where Kelly introduced the last song of the evening.. I Stopped to fill my car up" it was one of those moments where you gather with your mates at a club form a group huddle and sing along to the last song of the evening.. Instead this wasn't your cheesy closing song this was a innovative song to end.....

    But there's always more..

And by that I mean an encore and bloody hell what a hell of an encore!! A Thousand Trees then burst from our lungs and the crowd went nuts again, then Traffic came into play to end the FIRST encore which put the crowd into a "Wait for it" stance..."

Then the Welsh boys came back on and performed their biggest hits "Have a Nice Day" and "Dakota" what a way to end a gig where we all originally thought it was gonna end at 10 and then all of a sudden before you know it, it's quarter past 11 and you have heard pretty much everything that this incredible band has to offer!

Well like i said I've seen everything they had to offer in one gig so would I see them again/what could be better etc the thing that could be better is that people should REALLY try and get into these guys! So under-rated! and this was one album! I have their best of (Decade In The Sun) and this album and I am already making room in my wallet for the rest of their catalog.. and oh yes they have definitely been added to my "Favorites" on Ticketmaster alongside Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Kasabian and a whole load of others.. but these guys are in the £40-£70 area... and these guys these Welsh boys who have been around for 18 years nearly go for £30 and you get everything I mentioned above?? Need I say more for this fine, special little Welsh band?? Well let's just end it on the fact that I wasn't Just Looking....

Performances And Cocktails GIVE THIS ALBUM A TRY!

    Best songs of the night:

    1. Just Looking
    2. Roll Up and Shine
    3. I Stopped to Fill My Car Up
    4. Pick a Part That's New
    5. I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio
