    4 Jul 2006, 15:01

    http://tinyurl.com/gzxpe (part 1)

    50. Slayer

    Genre: Thrash Metal
    Favorite Song: Raining Blood
Comments: The worst of the big 4. Kerry King's guitar sounds like a tortured cat, and they have no build-up to solos. They could be a lot better.

    49. Smashing Pumpkins

    Genre: Not sure
    Favorite Song: 1979
Comments: I never got the hype about them. Corgan's voice gets annoying, and they don't have enough talent to back it up. Then again, I don't know that much about them.

    48. Janis Joplin

    Genre: Blues Rock
Favorite Song: Piece of My Heart
Comments: A great singer, but I don't really like her songs.

    47. Black Flag/Rollins Band

    Genre: Hardcore Punk; Not sure.
    Favorite Song: Rise Above; n/a
Comments: I've never heard a Rollins Band song, but Black Flag is a decent hardcore band.

    46. Scorpions

    Genre: Hard Rock/Hair Metal
Favorite Song: I forget the name.
Comments: I should look into early Scorpions. They got too glammy after their first couple of albums.

    45. Pantera

    Genre: Early-Hair Metal; Later-Groove Metal
Favorite Song: Cowboys From Hell or Psycho Holiday
Comments: Ignoring their early years, they had two great albums and a few average ones. Dimebag was a riff master.

    44. ZZ Top

    Genre: Southern Rock
Favorite Song: I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
Comments: Everyone knows a ZZ Top song. Billy Gibbons was Hendrix's favorite guitarist, and rightfully so.

    43. Nine Inch Nails

    Genre: Industrial
    Favorite Song: n/a
Comments: Not my cup of tea. Trent is talented, but they bore me, and he's angsty.

    42. The Kinks

    Genre: Hard Rock
Favorite Song: You Really Got Me
Comments: Tremendously catchy, and one of the best British Invasion bands. Important, but they're not that great.

    41. Ted Nugent

    Genre: Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: Stranglehold
Comments: Good, simple, catchy guitar rock. He's a great guitarist.

    40. Stone Temple Pilots

    Genre: Grunge/Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: Unglued
Comments: The DeLeo brothers are great, and Scott Weiland is one of my favorite vocalists.

    39. Neil Young

    Genre: Varies
    Favorite Song: Southern Man
Comments: I never really liked Neil Young, but I respect him for being one of the hardest working men in music and never losing his fanbase.

    38. The MC5

    Genre: Punk/Garage Rock
Favorite Song: Kick Out the Jams
Comments: I have no idea how they got this high up, but they are a decent band, and they're from Detroit!

    37. The Yardbirds

    Genre: Blues Rock
    Favorite Song: n/a
Comments: I know next to nothing about the Yardbirds. Still, they did launch the careers of 3 great guitarists.

    36. Frank Zappa

    Genre: Varies
    Favorite Song: Apostrophe
Comments: I never liked Zappa, but the man's a genius. He's a hell of a guitarist, too.

    35. Jane's Addiction

    Genre: Alt-Metal? Funk Rock?
    Favorite Song: Mountain Song
Comments: Perry has a horrible voice, but it blends with the music perfectly. A solid rhythym section and a great guitarist in Dave Navarro.

    34. Alice in Chains

    Genre: Grunge
Favorite Song: Man in the Box or Grind
Comments: Not the best of the big 4, nor are they the easiest to listen to. Dark, depressing, brooding music that fits with Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell's vocals. I own Facelift. Good album.

    33. Rage Against the Machine

    Genre: Weird Hard Rock
Favorite Song: Sleep Now in the Fire
Comments: An amazing band. Morello may not be a great guitarist, but he makes great riffs and knows how to use effects. The band just oozes energy and anger--the kind of music that makes you want to punch something.

    32. The Doors

    Genre: Psychedelic/Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: Break On Through
Comments: I like the Doors, but I have trouble listening to them. Manzarek's keyboard can be annoying as Hell.

    31. Def Leppard

    Genre: Hair Metal
    Favorite Song: n/a
Comments: Disgusting hair band. Among the most overrated bands in music.

    30. Red Hot Chili Peppers

    Genre: Funk Rock
    Favorite Song: Sir Psycho Sexy
Comments: I only own Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which is eargasmic. I wish I could slap like that.

    29. Motley Crue

    Genre: Hair Metal
    Favorite Song: Dr. Feelgood
Comments: Probably the best hair band. Overrated though.

    28. Rush

    Genre: Progressive Rock
    Favorite Song: YYZ
Comments: A great band with unfortunately bad vocals. The Spirit of Radio is great.

    27. Iggy Pop

    Genre: Punk
    Favorite Song: Search and Destroy
Comments: Better than most punk singers, and one of the top 10 frontmen ever. Fun to listen to.

    26. Motorhead

    Genre: Heavy Metal
    Favorite Song: The Hammer
Comments: Great band. Lemmy is one of the best lyricists in metal, and all of their songs are fun to rock out to.

    25. Cheap Trick

    Genre: Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: Surrender
Comments: I don't see what's so great. None of them are really talented, and they don't have many great songs. What are some good Cheap Trick songs I don't know?

    24. Iron Maiden

    Genre: Heavy Metal
    Favorite Song: Aces High
Comments: The catchiest metal band ever. I love Steve Harris's speed and writing. Genius band.

    23. Judas Priest

    Genre: Heavy Metal
    Favorite Song: Victim of Changes
Comments: Halford is amazing. Otherwise, I find them boring for some reason.

    22. Deep Purple

    Genre: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
    Favorite Song: Highway Star
Comments: Not that great outside of Machine Head, and not as underrated as people claim they are. Still a great and talented band.

    21. Pearl Jam

    Genre: Grunge
    Favorite Song: Even Flow
Comments: My least favorite of the big 4 Seattle bands. Great guitarwork, and of course there's Eddie Vedder.

    20. Alice Cooper

    Genre: Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: School's Out
Comments: I don't know what he's doing up here. He never did anything that great, but he's been consistently decent.

    19. The Clash

    Genre: Punk/New Wave
    Favorite Song: n/a
Comments: I don't know why everyone loves this band so much. I'd take the Talking Heads or the Ramones over them in a heartbeat.

    18. Ozzy Osbourne

    Genre: Heavy Metal
    Favorite Song: Mr. Crowley
Comments: He was nothing without Randy Rhoads.

    17. The Ramones

    Genre: Punk
Favorite Song: I Wanna Be Sedated
Comments: I like their style. I prefer hardcore to classic punk, but these guys are still my 3rd favorite punk band.

    16. Cream

    Genre: Blues Rock/Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: White Room
Comments: Great band. Definitely Clapton's best. One of the greatest rhythym sections ever.

    15. Pink Floyd

    Genre: Early-Psychedelic; Later-Progressive Rock
    Favorite Song: Comfortably Numb
Comments: Way too low on the list. Hey You is an underrated song.

    14. Soundgarden

    Genre: Grunge
    Favorite Song: Jesus Christ Pose
Comments: I bought Superunknown recently. Probably the best grunge band. 4th of July is a kick ass song.

    13. Queen

    Genre: Hard Rock/Pop
Favorite Song: Tie Your Mother Down
Comments: What can you say about Queen? I think their earlier, harder songs, like Ogre Battle, are way underrated.

    12. The Sex Pistols

    Genre: Punk
Favorite Song: Anarchy in the UK
    Comments: They weren't that great.

    11. Aerosmith

    Genre: Hard Rock
Favorite Song: Train Kept A Rollin'
Comments: The first band I ever saw live (back in Deber). Before they started making ballads, they were one of the best bands on the planet.

    10. Kiss

    Genre: Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: God of Thunder
Comments: 90% show, 10% substance. I wish my bass was axe-shaped.

    9. Guns N' Roses

    Genre: Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: My Michelle
Comments: One great album, followed by mediocrity. I think they should switch places with Queen here.

    8. The Who

    Genre: Hard Rock/Proto-Punk
Favorite Song: Won't Get Fooled Again
Comments: Great, great band. They have my favorite rhythym section ever.

    7. Van Halen[artist]

    Genre: Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: Hot For Teacher
Comments: Sure they only had one truely talentd member, but they were an amazing band in the DLR years. Don't know much about Van Hagar, but if it's anything like Hagar's solo work, I won't like it.

    Genre: Grunge
    Favorite Song: In Bloom
Comments: A damn good band, but I'd take Soundgarden over them. Is it odd that I love In Bloom, even though I know that it's indirectly attacking me?

    5. Metallica

    Genre: Thrash Metal
    Favorite Song: Disposable Heroes
Comments: I am a proud owner of Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Both albums are nearly flawless, which makes 90's Metallica more dissapointing. Load and ReLoad are decent, though.

    4. AC/DC

    Genre: Hard Rock
Favorite Song: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Comments: A little high, but a great band. I'm one of the few fans who likes the Brian Johnson years as much as the Bon Scott years, although Scott was more consistent.

    3. Jimi Hendrix

    Genre: Hard Rock
Favorite Song: Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Comments: I really should buy Are You Experienced?. Or Electric Ladyland. Or Axis. Dammit, I need more Hendrix.

    2. Black Sabbath

    Genre: Heavy Metal/Proto-Doom/Proto-Stoner
    Favorite Song: Iron Man
Comments: I found Sabbath boring until recently for some reason. They're another band I need to look into. Iommi is one of the masters of riffs.

    1. Led Zeppelin

    Genre: Hard Rock
    Favorite Song: Whole Lotta Love
Comments: Do I like them? Yes. Do I find them overrated? Yes. They do deserve this spot, though. Any band that can make six classics in a row deserves a spot in the top 3 for sure.

Notable Bands Missing: Dead Kennedys, Sepultura (who almost made it), The Allman Brothers Band, Grand Funk Railroad, the entire death metal genre.

    100. Quiet Riot
