Pretty good list I'd say. I don't like Meshuggah or Opeth much, but I've heard that Watershed and Obzen are decent. Death Magnetic was superb, a real surprise. Traced in Air is easily my favourite of the's simply stunning. Different from Focus, but astonishing levels of musicianship and songwriting. Warrel Dane's was good, but Jeff Loomis' Zero Order Phase trumped it imo.

@ azharc: I wouldnt say they're all similar in terms of style, but if you're anything like me the genre doesnt matter so much as the quality of whatever it is. I think fantastic music can come out of any style :) @ mrinal24: Thanks :) i think it was a really good year on the whole, especially for metal! Im a huge fan of Opeth (i have a tattoo. nuff said :P) but Meshuggah surprised me, im not a fan generally but Obzen is pretty awesome. Agree about Metallica and Cynic completely too! Any others you can reccomend me from 08 i might have missed?

@ Gajita: Well, you should definitely try Jeff Loomis' solo album. Joe Satriani's new one had some good songs, and some filler...but check it out anyway. Shogun by Trivium is one of my favourites. It's become fashionable to bash Trivium, but this album is absolutely fantastic. Malmsteen's new one was cheesy formulaic stuff, but so much fun. Every song is a blast from the past!
