4CD and booklet/sleevenotes.
John Martyn's musical career spanned from 1967 to 2004. I was one blink away from missing it. My introduction to him and his work was a BBC documentary with the heartrending song "Sweet Little Mystery" and a Youtube clip of a man still performing from a wheelchair. His spirit made him irresistible.
For me, this whole mass of works is a "must-have" musically and a fantastic introduction to an artist and performer with wit and heart that fate determined I'd never see. Through absorbing this collection, I feel I have experienced something beyond his stage persona. His jokes on the musical records. His heart when sings. He's reported to have replied to the question "Do you wonder why you've lasted and others haven't?" with the quip "It's about being difficult to kill......." Perhaps it's a reflection on the industry...perhaps it was just on his own resolve to continue what he loved.
This is a biography of his 40 years in music. His own self-styled autobiography; a music record of his life, thinking and feelings. It's the detailed, loved and cherished moments of John Martin's self-portrait who despite being plagued by his own problems he shared, and continues to share. It's true, he "AIN'T NO SAINT" but it's his legacy to his fans; his generosity in sharing himself; all that he was with his fans through his music and lyrics.
Be assured you are not being robbed when you purchase this: 2 of the 4 CD's comprise of until now unreleased material. Add to that a delightful biographical booklet/sleevenotes which contain photos as yet unseen For diehard fans, the unreleased tracks in themselves may make this an appealling purchase and it's a truly great tribute to a man who was underrated in his lifetime but I am sure will become a much valued figure in the British music history.
