Pink Floyd Echoes
Whichever version you love (studio version or the Live at Pompeii version or other live set) the song is a masterpiece. Without lyrics, it would be a good instrumental, the lyrics without the music - just some lyrics.
The song is part of Meddle - the transition album between two different eras of the Pink Floyd music. In the middle strange, bizzare part of the song, Roger Waters is 'killing' his "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict" from the Ummagumma album, only to bring the Pink Floyd sound towards Dark Side Of the Moon and the later albums.
The instrumental part of the song is simply blowminding, with a delicate touch (one of Gilmour's best guitar solo s) in the Meddle version and with one of the band's most agressive sound on the Live At Pompeii set (just love David Gilmour's live guitar, Nick Mason's and Richard Wright's mad sound on drums, respectively on keyboards). Just brilliant!

I'd also like to mention here the Synchronization between Pink Floyd's Echoes and the footage from Stanley Kubrick's movie from 1968 - "2001: A Space Odyssey"

Video clip:
The lyrics
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine.

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks and no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Music saves.

Echoes is amazing! I never listened to live versions. I'll look for the version on Live at Pompeii. Thanks for the advice, man!

Meddle was actually the first Floyd-album I ever listened to, and it's sadly underrated. You made me realise how long it's been since I listened to it. Thanks! :-)

You are right, it is underrated but not among those who were curious enough not to limit their Pink Floyd auditions only to DSOTM, WYWH, THE WALL. you're welcome :)

There are a lot of people that unfortunately just listened to the ones you mentionen. But, hey, it's their loss. :-)

the lyrics without the music - just some lyrics - this is what I most loved about Pink Floyd : the perfect symbiosis between words & sound. However, I must contradict you & say that even if they are perfect together, both the lyrics & the music are great taken separately. It's not just lyrics, it's message, it's beauty, even without the music :)
