8 Mar 2008, 21:24A quiz about your top thirty artists. You’re gonna need last.fm or itunes or a list or some shit.
1. How did you get into 29?
Surprisingly, a lot of my new musical taste stems from Freshman Year at La Salle. In High School, I did all my classic rock research and I wanted to have a radio show, but didn't feel my knowledge of new music was good enough. So I would check out the CMJ's that came to the station and thought Death Cab for Cutiewas a retarded band name, but figured why the hell not just buy the new disc, Transatlanticism. I instantly loved it and got their back catalog. I still have yet to get a copy of Maps or whatever it's called.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
How does one chronicle the first song they hear by their favorite band. I can assume that the first song I heard by The Who was "My Generation" but the first song that really laid into a hefty impact in my life was probably "I Can See for Miles." Moons drums on that track inspired me to be a drummer.
3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
The Sword only has one album out, but it fucking Slays. Age of Winters is awesome. New Album in April.
4. What is your favorite song by 15?
King Crimson - Easy Money
5. What is your favorite song by 5?
Danava - By The Mark
6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Brian Eno - Backwater
7. What is your favorite song by 10?
Justice - Genesis
8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Countless good memories involving Warren Zevon, but my personal favorite was when Muller and Danno and I sang accapella Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner at Ryan's Last Drink 2007.
9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Yo La Tengo has a lot of really melancholy songs, but almost all of them still make me feel happy. The one that elicits the biggest smile is probably Mr. Tough.
10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
I only saw The Mars Volta open for RHCP and the venue sucked and they sounded terrible. I want to see them somewhere smaller than a big ass stadium because their sound is so chaotic that it just muddled together.
11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Again, way to ask me which is the first song I've heard from Paul McCartney, my namesake for Godsake. Solo McCartney, my first really big fav was Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. I loved that back in the day and still do.
12. What is your favorite album by 11?
The Doobie Brothers have so many awesome songs and thanks to Yacht Rock, I fully appreciate their smoothness, but my all time favorite is probably Listen to the Music even though What a Fool Believes is my most listened to track on this site.
13. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Wow. Black Mountain is so great on a collective level that singling one member out is hard. Obviously Stephen McBean is the songwriter and writes the music so he probably takes the change, but Joshua Wells is a fantastic keys player. So much mellotron!
14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
I see The Raveonettes every single time they come to Philly that I can. I think I missed one or two so far, but I saw them at least 4 or 5 times with another one lined up soon. Amazing live.
15. What is a good memory involving 27?
Mott the Hoople doesn't remind me of anything, but listening to the song Foxy, Foxy makes me feel good. So that's all that I can really say.
16. What is your favorite song by 16?
Nick Drake - Things Behind The Sun
17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Charlotte Gainsbourg - Everything I Cannot See
18. What is your favorite song by 21?
Band of Horses - Ode to LRC
19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
I swear to GOD every single one of these first song heard questions is a Pantheon Band! Led Zeppelin was most likely Stairway, but the first song I truly had a heavy obsession with when I was getting into the Zep was Misty Mountain Hop.
20. What is your favorite album by 2?
Radiohead.... this is going to be interesting. Obviously OK Computer is their swan song, but lately I have had a really deep connection with the new disc In Rainbows. Call me crazy, but something about the simple nature of it and the very personal songwriting, it might end up taking the cake for me. The only reason Radiohead is #2 here on last.fm is due to my need to listen to In Rainbows non-stop.
21. What is you favorite song by 3?
22. What is you favorite song by 8?
David Bowie - Life On Mars?
23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Jeff Buckley - Sadly, never due to his untimely death. RIP! I listen to Live at Sin-e nonstop though.
24. What is the worst song by 12?
Sigur Ros - All their songs sound similar so I can't really say there is a track I dislike. So far, I enjoy everything by them even tho I only have () and a few other tracks.
25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
vietnam - Although I saw them live before I got the cd, I guess it's safe to say the first memorable track was Step on Inside from their self titled debut... first track.
26. What is you favorite album by 7?
I only have Nina Simone's greatest hits as of now. But its fantastic.
27. What is your favorite song by 24?
The Shins - Turn A Square
28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Neil Young has so many amazing songs and I guess the one that makes me the happiest ironically enough is Down By The River because it reminds me of drunken Neil Young sing-a-longs with Druber.
29. What is your favorite album by 4?
Again, Vampire Weekend only has one album which is impressive that they hold the #4 spot here on last.fm, but it's so fucking addictive!
30. How many albums do you own by 20?
I own every album by Beck. Even a shit load of ones that are bootlegs that I wish I owned original copies of. So prolific, so good. Lemme do a quick count....14 to be exact.
24 Ene 2007, 23:52So I decided to start writing in this piece not that anyone will read it, but here goes.
I figure since every week I have a different #1 artist in my weekly charts that I will write why I have been addicted to said artist. SO let's start with last weeks artist: Man or Astro Man?
So these guys are ridiculously good surf rock from the 90's. And why I have been listening to surf rock lately eludes me. It was probably because one of the best concerts I was at last year was Dick Dale at the North Star in Philly. I was right up close to a legend and it was some of the greatest guitar work I have ever seen live and that close up. He played some excellent tracks like Nitro and Miserlou. He did covers of Deep Purple in the surf rock style that were mind numbingly great. Then I went on a search on this ol website for new artists. Thanks to surf rock radio I stumbled upon three new loves. The first was Link Wray who before Dick Dale made the style and the watery sound that would later be Dale's trademark and the trademark of every surf guitarist from The Ventures to Man or Astro Man?. Then I got into The Cramps who aren't exactly surf rock, but they have that style of guitar playing. Now, finally, I got my hand on a few Man or Astro Man? records and they have been treating me so good. Is it Man or Astro Man? is great and filled with awesome tracks like Taxidermist Surf. The best thing about surf rock is it makes you feel good. Especially the stuf that is straight up instrumental. I don't surf, I don't ever really want to, but I love the music that was the soundtrack to the culture.
If you are reading this and love surf music and have other recomendations, holla at me.
