Very busy and very stressed. I'm going for a masters in urban & regional planning with a view to study in China for a little while but these upcoming exams are going to be crucial. But yeah, apart from that I'm good. Really looking forward to this summer - adore the tennis slams and of course the WC should be fun, a lot more fun than the last one...

One of my favourite parts of The Iliad! Part of a recurring theme of priests/seers whose predictions are never acknowledged. The sculpture of the Laocoon is of course incredible. Crazy to think that level of brilliance and precociousness (figura serpentinata) was around in the Hellenistic era. Centuries later it still stands out. There's one scholar from the 18th century called J.J. Winckelmann who wrote a treatise on it and ended up laying the foundations for Neoclassicism.

I might have added them to my library at one point but then completely forgotten about them but it doesn't ring any immediate bells. That's really good stuff. I can definitely see the similarities between the two songs - similar sort of bittersweet vibe. I'll have to check that act out. Is it just one producer or a few people? Anyway, good luck! I lucked out a lot with the old last minute cramming this month - until the last exam that is (on art theories & writings). One 30 mins spent reading a small chapter away from a decent exam...

Just finished my last bit of college-related work yesterday - so I can take it easy now for the next few days and get my social life back. Have you still more work ahead of you? By the way, I'll try and email that thing to you again with a different account...

True indeed. I just wish some of the bonus tracks had replaced Asshole and The Monster. Anyway... I have a rec for you: Whiskey Blanket - Credible Forces. I think this group would be right up your street - you need to hear them (and they need to be heard). If Whiskey Blanket were based in NY or something (instead of Boulder, CO) there'd surely be a bigger following. The group is composed of 3 rappers, with each member playing an instrument. The emceeing is high calibre but the instrumentals are just gorgeous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrkkWmeerv0

The title MMLP2 is, in a way, misleading - because the album is a summation of his career. Hell, even the technical gymnastics could be perceived as a reviving of his formative, Infinite-era years. There's not THAT much of the essence of his major label sophomore on this one. The return to storytelling and topical songs is also nice. Some of the stream of consciousness rambling and whinging on Recovery could be a bit much. MMLP2 is scattershot and unfocused in places but overall there's a lot of good there. Almost certainly his best since The Eminem Show but it's obviously not on the same level of his first three.

Yeah. I wasn't a huge fan of the singles (or at least the ones that have been released thus far) but the album was good - lopsided but good. True, he's revisiting themes he's famous for, which makes derisory criticisms easy, but he's doing it self-consciously this time around (there are considerably less of the awkward, out of place bouts of juvenile humor etc. that brought Relapse and Recovery) and putting a fresh spring on things. What I also like is the resolution on songs like Headlights - he's bringing us up to date on the things that made him so fascinating to begin with - his background. The beat selection was a bit erratic though and I feel like Eminem experimented a little too liberally with his flows on certain tracks. We all know about the female choruses! I said previously that's it like a b-sides/greatest hits collection updated for 2013, where the tracks are respun sonically and treated as sequels. So Much Better=Puke II and Groundhog Day=Yellow Brick Road II.

And yeah, I think the Eminem/Cage thing is a bit overstated (something I probably did plenty of times in the past) but there's definitely an influence there. What did you think of Eminem's new album? Flaws aside, turned out better than I thought it would... Groundhog Day is one of the best tracks I've heard from him in a while. Shame it's a bonus track...

Haven't listened to Movies For The Blind in ages so might have to get back to you on that later still... did you read the air pollution thing? I finished the project a few days ago so I accumulated a fair few sources for it... more and more fascinating when you dig.

You're doing something science-related right?! Out of all the sources I used, this one would probably be the most conducive to what you're doing: http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/docs/00/30/42/49/PDF/acpd-8-11321-2008.pdf

Did you enjoy any of those albums I recommended? I was quite surprised at the lack of quality stuff I could rediscover... they sure as hell ain't all classics but worth a listen I'd like to think.

Still working hard man, you know what it is. I guess at least what I'm doing at the moment - a group project on air pollution in Beijing (and more broadly east-north east China) - is interesting. If there's one city in China you should make it your business to avoid it's Harbin. Fucking hell. China's in a horrible catch 22 now - the more its cities expand, which they are and will continue to - exponentially - often in clusters, the worse air pollution is going to get. Mass population influxes from rural to urban are pretty much going to keep this going for another while so China's pretty screwed on the environmental side of things. Heh, anyway, Midnight Marauders is ATCQ's best album imo. I much prefer it to TLET. That's not to say that TLET isn't a classic in it's own right but it's not as wide-ranging, or as influential, beat-wise and is begging for a remaster.

If you haven't heard Ascension you should check that out to see what you think. It's about a 6/10 for me which is a good rating, but I couldn't listen to it a lot..not just because it's so long.

I just remember talking about him with you and I was wondering if that was one of the things you had heard, I started it last night and it's kinda interesting but i'm less than 20 pages in lol. Have you heard any of Trane's free jazz stuff besides Love Supreme

No hard feelings about the other night, I think we were just on a different page about what we were getting at. Even in a musical context, personally I let lyrics take a minimal role in what I feel is important in music outside of hip hop, but I see where you were going now that we clarified it was out of the context of literature.

I think that Macklemore question demands more thought from me than I'm willing to muster outside of college education I'm afraid. Lo siento...
