  • Eurovision Song Contest 2010 - Semi 2: Review of Songs

    20 May 2010, 10:29

After reviewing the first semi final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 some days ago, I will now be doing the same for the second semi final.

    Semi Final 02

01 InCulto - Eastern European Funk (Lithuania)
A lot of human beat boxing is going on in this "funky" track, plus thrumpets and guitars to make its sound complete. It's sung in English, but I can not say I like it much. This will not qualify for the finals I'm sure. It is kind of a bad party song... 4/10

02 Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone (Armenia)
Armenia did very well since the entered the contest in 2006. This song starts off like it could be some kind of ballad, though it soon gets more uptempo. The chorus is quite nice actually, to me it sounds like happiness and summer. I see this reaching the final quite easily as Armenia always gets votes and have never yet send in bad songs. 7/10

03 Harel Skaat - Milim (Israel)
This song I've already been listening to for a while. It's a nice powerfull ballad, reminds me a bit of their 2008 entry Boaz' Fire In Your Eyes. Though it is an amazing track, I'd preferred the track Le'an which Harel also performed at the national final. This will no doubt reach the final and will most likely end top 10. 10/10

    04 Chanee & N'Evergreen - In A Moment Like This (Denmark)
I just love this track. I've been playing it lots already and its got the true classic Eurovision sound. This song probably would have won if it was send to Eurovision about 10 years ago. However it might do quite well this year as now it's the only one of its kind. I am hoping this will end at least top 10 in the final. 10/10

05 Michael Von Der Heide - I'll Pleut De l'Or (Switzerland)
A french track, I must say quite nice. It's better than some other Swiss entries in the past couple of years. However the sound is nothing new, a bit outdated perhaps? Nonetheless I do really like this track and hope they will reach the finals with this. However I do not see this happening. 8/10

06 Anna Bergendahl - This Is My Life (Sweden)
Like every year I have been following the Swedish preselections closely. This song however is not my cup of tea. It's a guitar driven ballad/mid-tempo. I got a feeling that it will do quite well and will give Sweden their almost every year returning place in the finals. 5/10

07 Safura - Drip Drop (Azerbaijan)
It is time for ladies singing solo tracks now as Safura from Azerbaijan brings us her powerballad now. Azerbaijan is doing very well since they joined the Eurovision Song Contest a few years ago. This r'n'b track really does the trick I think and it might give Azerbaijan their first Eurovision victory. Fingers crossed Safura sings it well. 10/10

08 Alyosha - Sweet People (Ukraine)
Another guitar driven ballad. Ukraine proved to be very succesful the last few years though that might change this time. This song does not get to me at all. 4/10

09 Sieneke - Ik ben Verliefd (Sha-la-lie) (Netherlands)
Well of course I can not be very objective when it comes to this track. I will only say three words about this onet: awful, next please. 2/10

10 Paula Seling & Ovi - Playing With Fire (Romania)
We're back to the modern uptempo tracks again. A duet this time, not the greatest song you will ever hear, but certainly better than the previous ones and might therefore be remembered. Does not have a lot of potential for the final I'd say, but it might only just reach it. 6/10

11 Anzambel Roka Žlindere & Kalamari - Narodnozabavni Rock (Slovenia)
Another funky rock track, a bit like Lithuania, though probably worse. Balkan sounding, not only because of the language in which it is sung. I do not know what to say or think about this. SLovenia used to send in some nice Slovenian balkan disco tracks, though they did not reach the finals with those, I quite liked them. This certainly is as a different sound, but not in a positive way. Next! 3/10

12 Niamh Kavanagh - It's For You (Ireland)
A true international ballad which builds up to the end. It is a welcome surprise after Slovenia, it may sound a bit like United Kingdoms entry My Time by Jade and a bit similar to Malta's My Dream. Could possibly do quite well. Definitely potential to reach the final. 7/10

13 Miroslav 'Miro' Kostadinov - Angel Si Ti (You Are An Angel) (Bulgaria)
A crossover between a dramatic ballad and upbeat track. I do really like this one. Miro might sing this partly in English as well. This song will definitely be among my favourites this year. 10/10

14 Jon Lilygreen & The Islanders - Life Looks Better In Spring (Cyprus)
This a-typical Cyprus ballad is not really a song you will remember after hearing 17 tracks. Cyprus might do better when adding some ethnic (Greek?) sound effects to their entries as I do not see Europe vote for this (and them) otherwhise. The song's not very bad though not very good either. 5/10

15 Feminnem - Lako je Sve (Croatia)
Feminnem particpated for Bosnia in the past if I remember correctly with the uptempo track Call Me. This is something different. A ballad, I'm curious to see how they will perform this live. It sounds quite good and builds up to an heavier end in the last part of the song. This should reach the final. 8/10

16 Sofia Nizharadze - Shine (Georgia)
A ballad for Georgia also, I do not think it is as good as other ballads in this semi. And to be honest I do not have to say a lot about this. It's just ok. 6/10

17 MaNga - We Could Be The Same (Turkey)
Turkey, very popular every year, are returning with a more rockier track. Nothing like their popular and modern entries like Shake it up Sekerim and Dum Tek Tek. Though those proved succesful, they never reached the first position again like Sertab did some years ago. This rock track isn't that bad and will no doubt reach the final. 7/10

Should definitely go to the finals: Israel, Denmark, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Armenia

Fill ups to make 10 entries for finals: Switzerland, Ireland, Romania, Turkey

  • Eurovision Song Contest 2010 - Semi 1: Review of Songs

    7 May 2010, 10:04

A while ago I've been watching video clips of all entrants on youtube and wasn't really pleased. I must admit I did not watch the entire clips so from now on I will be listening to all songs entirely and review them. I've already got some favourites which I have been playing over and over again for some weeks now. But unlike other years, they are only a few. So let's get started with song number one!

    Semi Final 01

01 Sunstroke Project & Olia Tira - Run Away (Moldova)
The start of this song is really Eurovision, it's got that Eastern etnic sound. Short after it turns into a more dance-orientated track. It reminds me a bit of some David Guetta tracks. It is not that bad actually. 7/10

02 Peter Nalitch & Friends - Lost And Forgotten (Russia)
A ballad, not really my thing this song. But it is probably not the worst song in this semi I'd say. It sounds a bit traditional and I have yet to understand what his "Friends" add to this song that makes him think its worthy having them on stage. 5/10

    03 Malcolm Lincoln & Manpower 4 - Siren (Estonia)
I'm already 50 seconds in this song and I still find it dull. It does give you a deserted - all alone at sea feeling, but doesn't a Siren also has to sound beautiful and sung by women? Probably a too conservative thought maybe, but this Malcolm and his Manpower 4 friends really will not seduct Europe to vote for them. 2/10

04 Kristina Pelakova - Horehronie (Slovakia)
Sung in Slovak, this song isn't too bad. Or maybe I am only feeling this way because next to Estonia's entry almost anything would be good? It's got the populair ethnic sounds in it, though the song doesn't sound very spectacular. I do not see this reaching the final. 5/10

05 Kuunkuiskaajat - Työlki Ellää (Finland)
Finland have reached the final a couple of times the last few years, with different kind of genres. A lot of them I did not expect to reach the final, however they did. This song sounds funny and about having a good time, but I have no clue what they are singing about. It might not be enough for the Finnish to reach the final, but at least its got Eurovision potential. 5/10

06 Aisha - What For? (Latvia)
We are back to English again with Aisha. A mid-tempo style track that invites you to clap your hands along with it. Aisha is guestioning everything in life in her song. It is probably for the best that she is singing this in English so some people might feel this song, though I am not. 5/10

07 Milan Stanković - Ovo je Balkan (This Is the Balkans) (Serbia)
The song does justice to its title. It really sounds Balkanish. I think I hear him singing about pizza's. But I guess that's just me. I don't like it. 3/10

08 Vukašin Brajić - Thunder And Lightning (Bosnia & Herzegovina)
Interesting to see B&H singing a song in English. Their own languaged has proved to be very succesful over the last few years. This song is different as it's got a more international sound, a bit rockier. I'd say it's an okay-song. 6/10

09 Marcin Mroziński - Legenda (Poland)
The start of the song is a bit sounding like opera, sung in Polish before they turn to English and backt to Polish again so every now and then. It's ballad style, a bit dramatic. I like this. The best ballad (of many already) so far. 8/10

10 Tom Dice - Me And My Guitar (Belgium)
Obviously Tom and his guitar dominate this entire song. It's another ballad in this semi, though it's probably the purest yet. It is not really my thing, but a lot of people will like this. I can see this reaching the final. 5/10

11 Thea Garrett - My Dream (Malta)
And yet another ballad. It's Malta so it's got an international sound, no ethnic or balkanish sounds. It's building up a bit and quite powerful. One of the better ballads in this semi I'd say. 7/10

12 Juliana Pasha - It's All About You (Albania)
This is the first really upbeat disco track you will hear on this years Eurovision. It is nothing special, though this could easily reach the final as its a welcome surpise after all those ballads. Well produced, final potential: yes, but it is probably too standard to reach top ten in the final show. 8/10

13 Giorgos Alkaios & Friends - Opa (Greece)
Greece always brings us a modern ethnic pop song. This year is almost the same. A really festive track, though its more traditional sounding than lets say Kalomira's Secret Combination or Sakis Rouvas entries. I've already heard this track a couple of times and I can say I like this. The Greeks always reach the final and I do not see any change in that this year. 7/10

14 Filipa Azevedo - Há Dias Assim (Portugal)
Portugal has done quite well the last 2 years. I especially liked their 2008 entry which unfortunately did not do very well in the final show. They are trying their luck with a ballad again this time. It gets powerful in the second part of the song though it doesn't get me as much as 2008's Senhora Do Mar did. Maybe the performance will change that? 6/10

15 Gjoko Taneski feat. Billy Zver & Pejcin - Jas Ja Imam Silata (FYR Macedonia)
A modern rockish track with some rap in it as well. I can not say it's bad, but it isn't much good either I think. Might do well as it is not a ballad, so people will notice and remember this. 6/10

    16 3+2 - Butterflies (Belarus)
If you were afraid you would not get another ballad before this semi would be over, you do not have to worry. Belarus also brings us a ballad in which 3+2 sing that they are butterflies. Compared to their other entries, this is entirely different. I can see them performing this quite static. This song does get you a bit in the end. Could be final material. 6/10

17 Hera Björk - Je Ne Sais Quoi (Iceland)
I loved this song when I first heard it a few weeks ago. It reminds of their 2008 entry This Is My Life by Euroband. It's a danceable track and totally Eurovision worthy. It has to reach the final, not only because its is one of the few non-ballads and will therefore stand out, but also because its a fantastic track. I just hope Hera will use the stage and move around a bit as we do not have to worry about the singing part. 10/10

Overall it can be said that a lot of ballads will make it heard for each of them to be remembered by the voters. Some good ballads might get lost in this semi and will maybe not reach the final, which would be a shame. As it is only 17 countries performing there is a good chance to reach the final as more than 50% will go through.

Should definitely go to the finals: Iceland, Moldova, Greece, Poland, Malta, Albania.

Fill ups to make 10 entries for finals: Belarus, Portugal, Belgium, FYR Macedonia.

  • 10 Favourite Albums of 2009

    1 Ene 2010, 16:14

So here is a list of 10 albums which I played most during 2009. One of them released in 2006, the others are all brand new 2009 releases.

    10. Laura Pausini - Laura Live World Tour 09

The latest release by Italian singer Laura Pausini. The downside about this release is that Laura will take a 2 year break starting next month. Laura Live World Tour 09 is a CD/DVD compilation of her last concert tour which I unfortunately was not able to attend. Although it is not as good as her previous tour, San Siro 2007, it still has great performances of her biggest hits and new tracks from her 2008 studio album Primavera in anticipo which I loved. I am a bit disappointed that during this World Tour she did not sing the full tracks for Il Mio Beneficio and Bellissimo Così as they were only included partly in medleys. The CD in this release also has 3 new studio tracks for which I like Casomai the most as the track builds up from mid to uptempo. Non Sono Lei is a beautiful ballad in and with a very nice retro style. I can not wait for Laura to get back in the studio and come back somewhere 2012.

    09. Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster

Just like most people around the world did, I also loved Lady Gaga's Poker Face, LoveGame and others of The Fame album. I'm usually not a big fan of re-releases as they mostly only feature one to three new tracks so buying it is a bit pointless. However Lady Gaga did things differently and re-released her album with a bonus disc including 8 brand new hits. Almost 5 minutes long Bad Romance has to be one of 2009's best tracks for me with its close resemblance to Poker Face and a stunning video in Lady Gaga style. Other higlights on this re-release have to be Alejandro and Telephone (featuring Beyoncé), the latter being the new single.

    08. Blake Lewis - Heartbreak On Vinyl

On some Blogs there was some excitement going on about Blake Lewis' single Heartbreak on Vinyl of his then yet to be released 2nd album. The first album Audio Day Dream never really got to me with the exception of a few tracks however his 2nd album did. I think it sounds more accessible (probably also more commercial), though I believe it is not an instant success. Which is a shame as many songs got a lot potential. My favourite has to be Freak with great instrumental parts during the song.

    07. Antti Tuisku - Hengitän

Antti Tuisku is a Finnish Idol contestant of one of the first series. In the past I did came across his name but never found songs easily (and also did not put many effort in finding them either). However I was send two tracks by a friend, Juuret and Viilto, which came from his only just released album Hengitän. After a few listens I fell in love with Viilto, meaning 'cut', a touching ballad. The rest of Hengitän features songs quite similar to the first two mentioned. Not only from listening to the songs but also from the artwork design and photos you can tell this album is meant to be his spiritual one. It made me wanting to here more which resulted in buying to other albums, dated from 2006, and one of them can also be found in this list.

    06. Alexandra Burke - Overcome

Another singer contest artist in this list is 2008s Brittish X Factor winner Alexandra Burke. I must admit, I do not like Hallelujah at all. I might have listened to it one or twice and that is more than enough. Though a big chance occured when hearing her second single Bad Boys (featuring Flo Rida). A great track which I started to like more and more over the months. Definitely one of the best tracks on Overcome. The album has a great number of uptempo tracks, a few even written by RedOne (but which singer hasn't these days...) and some great ballads. I'm still a bit confused why they picked
Broken Heels as her new single while instead The Silence could have had a great impact this winter with its powerful vibe. Hopefully this will still be released as a single in the coming months.

    05. Kate Ryan - French Connection

Babacar, a cover as usual, is one of my most played tracks in 2009. It's an easy listenable track, more in the direction of pop than dance and with a simple but awesome video. Though I was hoping for a new studio album this year, I am quite happy with the release of this all French greatest hits. I believe her French language tracks are more appealing so it is really nice to have an album full of such. Les Divas Du Dancing, Tes Yeux, Libertine 2009 and Ella elle l'a stand out next to already mentioned Babacar. I can not wait for next year in which we hopefully get a new Kate album!

    04. Alcazar - Disco Defenders

Alcazar participated again in 2009s Swedish pre-selection show for the Eurovision Song Contest called Melodifestivalen with Stay the Night. An easy going track which gets stuck in your head in no time. A track I've been listening to lots in the first couple of weeks and almost never listened to once I had their album for a few weeks. A more interesting track on Disco Defenders is Burning that brings a bit more clubby feeling. Promo's were sent out in the UK and a 3track single was released in Germany thought neither made a big impact on any charts. Which is a shame as I believe Burning is the best track they've made in a long time. Recently a Special Edition was released containing a not so good cover version of Wham's Last Christmas and a new track. In February 2010 Alcazar will be back at Melodifestivalen for the fourth time with Headlines. Will be interesting to hear what they have come up with now.

    03. Bananarama - Viva

My first awareness of Bananarama was when I heard my all time favourite (Brittish) band Steps performing their version of Last Thing On My Mind and later on Ace of Base's Cruel Summer. In 2005 Bananarama released two great singles which unlike the album Drama did have some success. I was quite excited when reading about new material for 2009's summer. The first and only single from Viva, Love Comes, I think is a fantastic track. Don't expect something refreshing or you will disappointed. It's just Bananarama doing what they do best: making great danceable pop songs that do not set any chart on fire. Viva only contains 11 songs when not taking in account the various iTunes and other online retail shops bonuses. Personal highlights are Love Don't Live Here and The Runner, a fabulous cover of the original by Three Degrees.

    02. Sarah Dawn Finer - Moving On

There's another Melodifestivalen contestant in this list, Sarah Dawn Finer, who in 2007's series performed one of my favourites of that year I Remember Love. I have to admit that I was not that keen on the album that followed but in this years Melodifestivalen Sarah completely made up for that. Moving On should have won not only this years festival but also the entire Eurovision Song Contest 2009. It is my most played and loved track of the year. A ballad, who could have believed that. Some may say its a bit over produced / arranged but I do not care. It is perfect. This time the album that followed was a bit more commercial and contains a lot of great tracks; the sensitive Is That Enough, the aggressive Not the One and touching Virus. If there is one album of 2009 you should definitely have, this is the one.

    01. Antti Tuisku - New York

Possibly not the number one you would expect in a list full of 2009 releases, but this 2006 release by Antti Tuisku is by far my favourite album of 2009. It is nothing like his other album in this list, Hengitän. New York was released back to back with the album Rovaniemi (Antti's place of birth). While Rovaniemi contains melodramatic ballad/midtempo tracks, New York is really defending disco in a way Alcazar still has to learn. It's packed with 11 pop/dance tracks with only one small negative effect: it's all sung in Finnish. Though it does not spoil the fun for me to listen to them over and over again. I'd like to compare New York with Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor, the only differences being the language and male vs female voice (though you can be questioning this with some of Antti's high notes in certain songs). Hitsingle Sekaisin and Levoton are the best tracks on New York and can not make you sit still when listening to them. The more laidback sound of Tunturibiisi is really appealing and explodes into the fantastic Tulevaisuus. The heavy bass in Salaisuus is irresistible but can not beat the groovy rhythm of Onnellinen. My plays of Antti Tuisku have already exceeded 1000 and are likely to go up even more in 2010. I still can not get enough of listening to New York and his other albums I own at the moment. Let's hope that 2010 brings another great music discovery as this!

  • Anthony Callea's new album

    Anthony Callea

    A New Chapter

Just got his new album A New Chapter with the post last Saturday and it's great!
I think this album is a bit of a grower in the beginning 'cause its different from his debut album since it's quite a lot of rockstuff. You can compare it a little bit with his 2nd single Rain from the album Anthony Callea.

Never expected this much rock as the first single from his new album A New Chapter, Live For Love, is an awesome ballad.
Anyway there are great rock songs on this album.
I prefer Perfect Mistake, There's Always Time, Addicted To You and Almost.

As for the ballads I think the title track A New Chapter, the touching Now You're Gone and the first single Live For Love are amazing.

I also managed to get the exclusive Itunes bonus track (for Australia only) Whatever It Takes which is a nice midtempo. Should have been on the album I think instead of either Here I Go Again or Want You To See of which the last one is supposed to be one of Anthony's favourites.
