It's August as of this weekend, the silly season is upon us, so I may as well make a start.

I'm not usually a fan of mashups though I'll give them a fair listen because sometimes, just sometimes, along comes a gem. This mashup of Nirvana vs Rick Astley is most definitely one of them. I'd go so far as to say it's the best I've ever heard.

How did we get here and what did we do to deserve this?

You might remember Rick Rolling last year, brought to us by the charming boys and girls of 4chan, who'll I'll come back to later. Rick Rolling was a prank where people were duped into clicking on something, only to be taken to the video of Rick Astley's 80s hit Never Gonna Give You Up. The prank snowballed to the point where huge, national sports games weren't immune. I had a little go too, using Linkin Park as bait for my April Fool's Rick Roll last year.

Rick Rolling inspired Rick Rawk. I am sorry to direct you to a site called AudioPorn Central (it's safe for work) which pulled together an album of mashups of classic rock songs mixed up with Rick Astley's in November 2008 (still available to download). This week's reco is on this album.

Earlier this month, Thriftshop XL www.thriftshopxl.com did the mashup video which was then picked up last week by DJ Morgoth and featured in his blog. Viewing numbers are rising like crazy and are already well above 1 million.

I remember when Rick Astley was in the charts the first time around. This song was literally everywhere, there was no escape. And I hated it. I never watched the video until now. I had no idea he smiled in it!

In case you're wondering, I can tell you right now - nobody danced like that. We did wear those clothes though. I had a mac like that, I've still got my black polo necks. I'm not a chinos person, though my brogues have three-inch heels, the ones I have now, I mean. Then, my shoes were flat, boyish, with giant buckles.

Ooh! A smile and a wink! He's still got it. It never left him

So what was that about 4chan?

Oh yes. There was a storm in a teacup yesterday. Well, when I say storm, I mean the kettle barely had a chance to boil.

Allegedly, (because as far I know, it wasn't confirmed), AT&T blocked 4chan in some parts of America. I'm sure you can imagine the rest. There were usual bleats of 'freedom of speech!', 'censorship!', 'neutrality!' and what was the other one? Ah, 'The CEO is dead!' It was absolutely hilarious, especially in Twitter where it became a trending topic.

Alas, whatever the matter was was resolved on the same day, effectively cheating us of our summer drama. I was looking forward to memes, cartoons, more 'freedom of speech!' and 'censorship!' and 'I can bypass my Dad's account using a proxy!' So no popcorn for me, then. Poor Lulu.

Yes, very much real! I seem to be a bit addicted to it. I'm sure my playcount for the video is about to reach double figures! I know. It's more than a year since the global April Fools too. I loved it! This year was dull in comparison.
