Standout track from one of the best albums of 2009. This version is the original, not the Sasha remix.

Not long ago, one of my Last.fm friends told me he couldn't hear any emotion in electronic music and asked how I did and did I have any good examples. I reached for my favourites, Amon Tobin's Slowly for one which to me is extremely sensual, but I failed to impress my friend. I can't remember who it was now, but if you're reading this, I'd like to suggest this new, and probably last, album from Telefon Tel Aviv, Immolate Yourself. All of it.

My first listen was totally blind, I didn't read any reviews or blurb. On first impression, the music is thoughtful, dreamy and melancholic, using now classic themes from early techno, mixed up with contemporary classical, ambient idm along with 80s new wave and synthpop. Vocals are vague and whispered, from somewhere far, far away. It sounds as good quiet as it does loud.

Charlie Cooper

Then I looked it up and was saddened to learn of Charlie Cooper's untimely death in January this year, between the German and US release dates of the album. This is awful news. Telefon Tel Aviv are among the greats of modern electronica, widely revered and respected. Knowing this, the album takes on a whole new sense. The vague, whispered vocals are now voices from the grave, the emotion in the music our grief and sense of loss. Even the title, 'Immolate Yourself' becomes more sinister: to immolate is to offer as a sacrifice by killing or by giving up to destruction.

You Are the Worst Thing in the World begins with one of my favourite noises in industrial techno - percussion on what sounds like giant metallic factory pipes. I've no idea if they are but I love that sound. Telefon Tel Aviv have a perfect sense of timing, of when to repeat, when to hold and when to move on. In part, it's almost predictable, but you need that if you are to lift off and transport yourself. It's not the vocals that are the most important element here, it's the repetition of phrases and melodies, of shifts and changes and when they occur. It has to be exactly right because when you dance to this, you need it to pull you into the right zone. One wrong moment and the whole effect is ruined. This kind of electronica is extremely unforgiving. 'You Are The Worst Thing In The World' is an example of perfection. From the blippy popcorn and metallic factory pipes opener to the swooping and soaring frothiness of the main body, the music drifts away from reality. You find yourself following it, against your will and without thinking.
