I was going to recommend something serious and cerebral, along the lines of Gabriel Fauré's Pie Jesu but a funny thing happened on the way to the forum...

I found an old video of Sarah Brightman performing the now definitive version of Pie Jesu, by Andrew Lloyd Webber. As lovely as it was and as much as I enjoy listening to Sarah, unfortunately I am old enough to remember when she first made it big. Unfortunately or fortunately? Because this is one of my all-time favourites.

Hot Gossip were ITV's response to Pan's People, the dance troupe on BBC 1's Top of the Pops. Hot Gossip were camp, raunchy and most of all, didn't take themselves too seriously. It might interest some people to know they were created by Arlene Philips, who also choreographed all those naughty routines. I knew them from The Kenny Everett Video Show, which as we know, was all done in the best possible taste.

So when Sarah Brightman, one of the Hot Gossip dancers and someone most of us hadn't heard of, appeared with the group with 'I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper' you can imagine the impact. The song makes references to Flash Gordon, which was still being repeated on BBC 2 in the 70s, there's a quick reference to the intergalactic music from Close Encounters of The Third Kind, which is also referenced in the line "What my body needs is close encounter three", and last but not least, Star Wars was absolutely huge and all things space related were being devoured by us.

The song went to number six in the UK charts in November 1978. Thirty years later and we are still space obsessed, although perhaps it's more of a space/time continuum. 2008 is definitely David Tennant's year as Doctor Who. If we were devouring all things Star Wars in 1978, we are doing the same with all things Doctor Who now. Recent reports suggest Tennant has been offered £1.5 million to return as The Doctor in the next series. Back in the 70s, it was Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, the good Doctor's assistant, who was this loved.

I hope you enjoyed this ramble into nothing in particular. More silly nonsense next week, I promise. It's August, what can I say...

Babs My Gang

I haven't finished yet.... wait till I find a good Kenny Everett clip. Did I say good? They're all good! I might be a while... :D

babs, you have awoken memories of the confusion of a nascent sexuality. Pan's People, Hot Gossip, and the Noland sister made me confused in a way I would not come to understand until a good 10 years later. As did Dr Who's assistant Leela.

  • Babs_05

lol! oh I was never really a fan of Leela. Nor Romana or anyone after Sarah Jane. Glad you're enjoying your trip down memory lane. :)

So, is Dr. Who a good show? I've heard a little bit about it, but it doesn't get a lot of coverage here in the US. I'm not even sure if I have BBC.

Doctor Who is one of the best.

Hahaha, that's hilarious! I remember this song from the time it was played on and on in the radio, but never recognized that it is Sarah Brightman, LOL. I like some of Sarah Brightman's songs, she has a magnificent voice, but I'm not in with the Andrew Lloyd Webber things, not my thing. Now this! I really have to look, if I can find some more of such funny tracks. :)

Wow, I didn't know Sarah Brightman was going to be at the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony! What a coincidence! I really like her voice, I like the clarity and purity. She doesn't get nasal or throaty ever, not like Katherine Jenkins. No, I'm not a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber either, never have been. Glad you enjoyed the video! lol I've been thinking about what to reco next week. I've got a few ideas... :D

How is that Robin Hood series? I've been wanting to check that out since I heard of its inception. Apparently, there's a third Starship Troopers movie out now. Have you seen the first? Pretty classic modern day B-movie.

Robin Hood - is that the one with Keith Allen (Lily Allens' Dad)? I've not been able to get into that. It's supposed to be very good. I've seen one Starship Troopers. The first one, I think. Not seen any since. I just got 3 x email notifications saying you commented here, but I only see two comments. Did you delete one?

    8 Ago 2008, 23:17
  • MrModernRock

Yeah, I deleted the first one after I tabbed down and saw that it recognized the second paragraph. So I deleted it and tried formatting (the bold) and celebrated in the next post =) Hopefully this means recommended reading will follow soon along with that revamped reply tracker.

Re: Robin Hood I'm not familiar with that actor, but according to wikipedia Keith Allen plays the Sheriff of Nottingham. I've only seen about half of the pilot episode, but I definitely liked what I saw. I love Robin Hood. Hell I even like the Kevin Costner flick despite Costner's presence.

Wow - blast(off) from the past. As well as the ones you mention, there's 200: A Space Odyssey (listen to the beginning notes) & star trek (starfleet / the federation). There hasn't been a real Doctor since Tom Baker. (Well, okay maybe Eccleston.) And companions should come in pairs (Ian & Barbara, Nyssa & Adric, Sarah Jane & Harry) though Mary Tamm's Romana was great. Thanks Babs, for the reminder.

My pleasure, thanks for reading. :) Tom Baker was fantastic. Much more powerful than David Tennant, despite the paper bags of jelly babies. But I like them both, so it doesn't matter. I liked Eccleston in the role too. I suppose we had Rose and Mickey. Martha and Donna always had Rose in the shadows.

Great subject for a journal! 'Starship Trooper' was one of many songs released in '78 that got this 10 year old boy obsessed with music. I spent a night about 2 months ago watching Kenny Everett clips on Youtube....I loved his TV shows growing up back then. A brilliant radio DJ too...

Thanks for the comments, sonnycheeebah, anderai, glad you enjoyed the song! :) anderai - funny you should say that, once I start watching Kenny Everett clips, that's it, nothing else gets done. I loved him too.

Heya! I came across "I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper" early sometime this past summer and I never knew Sarah Brightman had performed this kind of music! Are you aware that 10 years ago the track was re-released in the UK and Germany and remixed to coincide with the release of the Starship Troopers film? This latest incarnation of the track is simply called Starship Troopers by United Citizen Federation Ft Sarah Brightman and a couple of the remixes feature dialogue from the movie.

Hi, no, I didn't know that! That's brilliant! It doesn't seem to be streamable. Hope it is at some point, I'd like to hear it.

Hmm I couldn't find any streams of the remixes anywhere, but I do have the singles so I could upload a couple tracks if you'd like to hear! Actually listening to the remixes over again it sounds as if the vocals have been tweaked so that it sounds like the lyrics are "I lost my heart to THE starship trooperS" as opposed to "a starship trooper." Hmm interesting lol
