28 Jun 2006, 16:09this is turning out to be a great summer...
first of all, I run into a shitload of buddies that I thought I'd might never see again... then I get completly starstruck, running into Michael Schumacher at work...
what happened is that my good old friend Huge and I decided to check out the José Gonzáles show at Le National in Montreal (our hometown).. we were third row center, blended into a truely hipster crowd.
his special guests were unheard of to us.. then again, we were new fans of José's...
Psapp, was awesome... the mix of beautifully voiced indie-pop, electro, an english accent, the joy of toys and an unnatural obsession towards cats coming out of 6 great musicians was greatly appreciated. Even the saddest of songs, Leaving In Coffins, made us happy. On some shoutbox, someone coined the term toytronica... which is on the dot. I wanted one of their crazy cat T-Shirts, but 20$ was too much for me to spend. They were fun, light and entertaining. The lead singer was so friendly and threw toy cats into the crowd (my friend almost caught one). Juana Molina and José Gonzalez even surprised us with a toy jam. (9/10)
Juana Molina, I had checked out beforehand.. but was not what I expected... I thought she would be this mellow latin chick with a classical guitar... kinda like Carla Bruni... but not at all... she had a guitar... but also.. what I could make out as a drum machine, a sampler, some keyboards a couple of effect pedals and a bunch of cables !! in other words... she backed herself electronicaly instead of hiring a band.. every element from every song was played from scratch... looping her voice and guitar right in front of us, simulating different instruments and just impressing the whole crowd with what I can only call her canon of one. She piled layer after layer, creating some of the most complex arrangements that could come out of such a tiny person. I'm really amazed that she doesn't get lost in all of that beautiful chaos. At first, she looked kinda bitchy, but we ended up finding out that the tech had botched his job and her monitors were whacked... "A was way louder than B" she said... so we forgave her. But still, her story about a song in which a neighbor's dog incessantly barks didn't have an ending... I still think she pulled an Elaine and killed that dog. To bad my spanish is rubbish, I'd really like to here those lyrics again... I fell in love with her music and one-woman show, I'm probably going to buy one of her CD's in a near future. (9/10)
Finally... José... the Headliner... ahhh josé... Ever since I stumbled onto Crosses, I've been in love with his music... Live, he sounds exactly the same, you can feel the power of his voice and the precision of his picking... this man is really a talented guitarist... and his show is raw... he sped right through every song, solo, with little banter... which was kinda dissapointing... but once he got a standing ovation, he warmed up a lot, started kidding around... maybe he was just nervous. I found out, that he truely is a sucker for Europop, playing both Heartbeats and Hand on Your Heart which are respectivly covers of Heartbeats and Hand on Your HeartAfter a few encores... the show ended, sadly, bt since it was a small venue I got to meet him and chat with him a bit.. he was really nice and even signed my ticket... he truly is a sweetheart... (9.5/10)
oh and my friend had the funniest encounter with Pierre Lapointe, but that's another story..
26 Jun 2006, 23:25I don't know if much people noticed, but this has been bugging me for months, and I'd like other fans' opinion...
which song do you prefer between Stability off of The Photo Album and Stable Song off of Plans
For those who don't know.... they're pretty much the same song, except that Stability is over 12 minutes long...
I prefer stability... the drum "solo" and the part where Ben sings in the background give me the chills

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:
What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
I think it was The Tulsa Trap
What is your favorite album by 2?
Definitely Roseland NYC Live, the production is amazing.
What is your favorite lyric that 5 has sung?
it makes perfect sense for children to practice having love affairs at summer camp,
it's practical evolution;
the perfect chance to pollenate another city with blanks.
only seeming more intentional than the seeds of a dead dandelion
getting caught in the breeze and the act that follows,
you'd like to think of as a passive fertilization,
well it might be as dodgy deliberate as the bar scene or date rape.
it makes perfect sense for children to practice making sex at summer camp.
ok that was the whole song...
How many times have you seen 4 live?
Never, when they first started out, I didn't really like Coldplay, I thought they were just Radiohead copycats... when I actually got around to liking them, ticket prices were sky-high...
What is your favorite song by 7?
Right Where It Belongs
Simple melody, powerful message... Home gets a honorable mention, though
What is a good memory you have involving 10?
One of the funniest scenes of a short film I made during my first year in college had Seventeen playing in the background.
Is there a song by 3 that makes you sad?
You can't help to feel some kind of sadness everytime you listen to Iron & Wine... but The Trapeze Swinger reminds me of a sad moment
What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
I like Portishead for their music... I barely listen to the lyrics.
Right Where It Belongs
What is your favorite song by 9?
I like just about every song he has ever made but Crosses always moves me...
How did you get in to 3?
My friend Bryan and I were swapping some remixes by the Postal Service and one of his was tagged as being a new Postal Service song called "Iron & Wine"... it was actually Iron & Wine's cover of Such Great Heights. I figured it was a mistake but didn't look into it right away. About a year later, I heard The Trapeze Swinger and I've been hooked ever since.
What was the first song you heard by 1?
Hmmm really hard to tell because come on, every hipster around me was listening to radiohead in the late 90's. maybe creep, maybe fade out, maybe paranoid android... but THE song that hooked me to radiohead was Talk Show Host
What is your favorite song by 4?
Again, hard to tell... Lately, I've been digging See You Soon (acoustic) but there's no sole favorite....
How many time have you seen 9 live?
Sadly never... the only time I've heard of him coming to Montreal, I was out of town...
What is a good memory you have involving 2?
Lunch at the Philantrope!. Playing Pool with le vieux caribou.
Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad?
For me, The Shins are chock full of happy memories... but I must admit Saint Simon reminds me of people that I won't see for a while.
What is your favorite album of 5?
The only one that I know of: Hymie's Basement.
What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung?
please remember me, finally
and all my uphill clawing
my dear, but if i make the Pearly Gates
i’ll do my best to make a drawing
of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
an angel kissin’ on a sinner
a monkey and a man, a marching band
all around the frightened trapeze-swinger
What is your favorite song by 1?
My all-time favorite Radiohead song would be very difficult to pinpoint... I'd have to say Wolf at the Door, but I'm wondering if Myxomatosis would kick ass live... by the way, I know that it's Cliche to have Radiohead a my top band, but I don't know how that happened, their not my *favorite* band
What is your favorite song by 10?
Destroy Everything You Touch, followed closely (litteraly!) by International Dateline
How many times have you seen 8 live?
Never... I don't think that they've ever played in montreal...
What is your favorite album by 1?
Hail to the Thief
What is a good memory you have involving 9?
I can't write it on a website ;)
What was the first song you heard by 8?
Know Your Onion!
What is your favorite cover by 2?
I don't know any of their covers...
