  • Top 5 Feb 26-Mar 5

    6 Mar 2006, 2:29

Quite a week, quite a week. Many new discoveries. Like The Apples In Stereo. Yeah, top 5 this week because past 5 i didn't listen to a lot of musak.

    1. Sufjan Stevens (-)
Ah, my god. Genius. Seven Swans is terrific, it really displays his versitility as an instrumentalist, but Illinois is his masterpiece. Brilliant, intelligent lyrics reign on that album. Seriously, listen to the end of Come On! Feel the Illinoise!

    2. (tie) The New Pornographers (+4)
I really can't decide which I like better, Twin Cinemas or The Electric Version. Twin Cinemas is more meaningful and makes you think, but The Electric Version just has this undeniable sense of fun that makes you want to dance around and jam on an air guitar. Yeah, I'm so hardcore.

    2. (tie) Modest Mouse (-)
Sad Sappy Sucker is unlike any of their works. In a good way though. I keep going back to it merely because it is different. Kinda shallow, but hey, it's a good album anyway.

    4. Arctic Monkeys (-)
They're unfortunately shallow, and they sound exactly like every other post-punk band to release an album in the last six months. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor is good fluff for a while, though.

    5. The Blood Brothers (+3)
The Blood Brothers are, quite simply, my favorite metal band. Guitarmy just about sums up all the emotions on Burn, Piano Island, Burn.

Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Cross out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

    5) Why are you frightened, can't you see that attitude?
    6) Oh, Joe Dimaggio's done it again!

    9) As I travel down the back roads, of this home I love so much.
    10) Demonstrate, I was raised from the start by a priest and a maid on the park.
    11) Please, tell me what to do!

  • Top 10 Feb 12-19

    21 Feb 2006, 20:38

I swear, some of my music isn't transmitting.

    1. Minus the Bear (-)
Minus The Bear is 311 with heavier guitars and more obsurd titles. That being said, Minus The Bear is an okay band, not a great one.

    2. My Bloody Valentine (+5)
My Bloody Valentine is quite possibly the best band to come out of the country of Ireland. Very claustrophobic and unfeeling, yet still amazing.

    3. (tie) Radiohead (-)
I don't think I listened to any Radiohead this week, but go figure. They're the perfect blend of electronica and alternative. Being stoned would probably enhance the experience tenfold.

    3. (tie) The New Pornographers (+11)
I own all of their albums, but Electric Version is the only album I ever listen to. The bouncy tracks Ballad of a Comeback Kid and The Electric Version would keep anybody coming back for more.

    5. Mogwai (-3)
I am seriously contemplating whether Mr. Beast is perhaps superior to Young Team. Like I've said before, expect huge Pitchfork raves when this album comes out.

    6. (tie) Wolf Parade (-)
I'll Believe In Anything is a masterpiece track, and their shaky vocals are effing mesmerizing.

    6. (tie) The Blood Brothers (+1)
The Blood Brothers are one of my favorite bands. I seriously want to KILL people while listening to Burn, Piano Island, Burn. Grahhh!

    8. (tie) Daft Punk (-)
Ahhh, Daft Punk. It's a guilty pleasure. If only dancing to techno was cool. I would be considered King Cool!

    8. (tie) Sufjan Stevens (+6)
I can't get enough of some of the tracks on this album. No, not Chicago.

    10. Pavement (+10)
Not much to say about them than what I've already said.
  • Random Rants. (In other words, it's fun to write stuff)

    18 Feb 2006, 2:35

Why is it that all post-punk albums must sound exactly the same? It's so frusturating! I got With Love And Squalor just the other day, and was pretty impressed by the first two tracks. But then, it fufills every post-punk stereotype. Filler, followed by songs that follow almost the same structure as the opening tracks. I just don't get it. You see, I know this will sound very hypocritical, considering I've never released an album, but why is it that all post-punk bands have to use traditional structure? All I'm saying is that the music scene today would be a lot more interesting if stereotypical post-punk bands would throw something extra into the mix every now and then.

In other news, I am liking Menos El Oso. They sound like 311 late in their career (technically, they're still together, but let's face it, they're getting old), but Minus The Bear is.... I don't know... edgier?

In other other news, I am kind of dissapointed in The Runners Four. It just doesn't keep my attention. It's kind of boring. That nostalgic Led Zeppelin sound just doesn't work for me I guess.
  • Top 10 Feb 5-12

    13 Feb 2006, 13:08

this one is kind of embarrassing. but mainly, the charts are messed up. I defidently listened to more music than this last week. Ah well.

    1. Postal Service (-)
I don't usually listen to them; Ben Gibbard just sounds like an ass to me. And I usually loathe music like this. But DNETL and Ben Gibbard are so wonderful at making goofy electronica with meaningful lyrics, it's hard to look down upon The Postal Service.

    2. Mogwai (+6)
Mogwai is incredible. There's not much more to it than that. They surprise you in so many ways, you have to hear it to believe it. Piano riffs that sound badass? Electronica that wants to kill you? Or just regular metal sounding songs that sound better than the rest!

    3. Modest Mouse (=)
I think that Sad Happy Sucker is overlooked by people nowadays; it is one of their better albums, and has wonderful pop songs that you can listen to over and over.

    4. Wilco (+6)
Wilco is one of my favorite bands; they do everything right. Their blend of alt/country just sounds so weird yet familiar. A Ghost Is Born is good, but A.M. is their masterpiece.

    5. (tie) The Arcade Fire (-)
Please, don't scream. I think The Arcade Fire are pretty good, but there are a lot of other bands out there that do what they do better. I mean sure, Funeral is a terrific album, very meaningful and from the heart, but it just seems to be lacking something. I'm sorry. Please don't hate me.

    5. (tie) Stars (-4)
Many people adore Heart as Stars' masterpiece, but I love the quirky electronica/slow instrumentals of Set Yourself On Fire. Man, you listen to that album forever.

    7. (tie) The Blood Brothers (-5)
The Blood Brothers are by far my favorite metal band. Crimes isn't nearly as good as Burn, Piano Island, Burn, but it's still pretty darn good. I just wish it had a little more melody in it, like BPIB does.

    7. (tie) Broken Social Scene (-2)
KC Accidental is amazing, just like 7/4 (Shoreline). Both are some of the best tracks out there, and believe me, I don't really believe in favorite tracks.

    7. (tie) My Bloody Valentine (-)
One of the best indie bands of the 90's, right next to Pavement. Gritty sounds and almost unintelligable lyrics equal amazing albums. Different than anything you've ever heard.

    10. Sonic Youth
So odd, it keeps you coming back for more. Effing defines "experimental rock". Very distorted.
  • A pretty accurate description of Iron & Wine

    13 Feb 2006, 2:03

    Iron And Wine

I am pretty sure Sam Beam is too mellow to break up with himself. He would just take a nap or something and everything would be okay when he woke up. Then he might write a pretty song about it! It would probably use dandilions as a metaphor.

    -Jeph Jacques.

I'm sorry, this is just so hilarious.Iron And Wine
