Notes- Boris went from not being in the top ten to the top spot, The Beatles dropped to number two. Radiohead and Pink Floyd switched spots and three bands were knocked out of the top ten: Arcade Fire, Explosions in the Sky, and Mono. The three new bands are Animal Collective, The Beach Boys, and of course Boris. The only band to retain its position was Bloc Party, which held firm at the tenth spot. Also it appears all of the post-rock bands were knocked out of the top ten.
  • Top 10 Albums (1970-1979)

    2 May 2008, 5:08

    (2/6)

    [9] Boston - Boston
The guitar on this album is so sexy. The sound is unique and clean. My favorite song out of the bunch would be Foreplay/Long Time.

    [8] Leftoverture - Kansas
Kansas has such a unique sound about them, some of their songs are almost cheesy but you have to appreciate the epic nature of most of their progressive compositions. The singles are great too. Some of my favorite tracks include Carry On Wayward Son and Cheyenne Anthem.

[7] The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Dark Side has an overall gloomy and dark feel to it. Yes, an overrated album at times, but still it's undeniable musical gold. Dark Side was the first CD I bought as a kid and I still listen to it on a regular basis. Time has one of the most memorable guitar solos and how can you not love the rototoms?

[6] Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
This album is an ode to a previous lead singer, Sid Barret. One of those albums where every track is gold and you're never left disappointed or let down. Notable tracks include the philosophical Wish You Were Here and the stab at the music industry, Have a Cigar.

    [5] (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Southern rock at its best, this album definitely comes off as crisp. Pronounced really does have it all, catchy songs like Gimme Three Steps plus long drawn out affairs like Tuesday's Gone. Not to mention the epic and iconic Free Bird. The one dissatisfaction with this album is the fillers in between the classic hits.

[4] Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One - The Kinks
A diamond in the rough that is their discography, The Kinks hit it out of the park with this album. It's a concept album so if you don't like one song, chances are you won't like most of them. The majority of the lyrics are geared toward feeling cheated by record companies, which can get old at times. The standouts for me are Lola, This Time Tomorrow, Get Back in Line, and Apeman.

[3] The Wall - Pink Floyd
The longest album for Pink Floyd, this album has a plethora of themes. The Wall has a more hard rock feel to it than previous albums, which is a nice change for the band. The majority of this album, like most Pink Floyd albums is depressing. Although this one happens to have it's lighter more optimistic tracks. There are more good tracks than I could name, so I'll just name a few: Young Lust, Run Like Hell, In The Flesh (Part II), and Comfortably Numb.

[2] Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
The top three of this list really was a toss up, this album could have just as easily been at the top spot. Every song is solid, you get rocking treasures like Rock and Roll and you get epic songs like Stairway to Heaven and The Battle of Evermore. The last of the album, especially When the Levee Breaks was spot on. The first three (Of the second half of the album) have an incredible feel to them, they could almost be one long epic song if so chosen. But the last one, When the Levee Breaks is just terrific jam, so bluesy, dirty, and rusty.

[1] All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
All Things Must Pass is the remnants of rejected Harrison songs while he was with The Beatles. Just imagine if this material was used with The Beatles. This album is very Sgt. Peppers like with out the strings and horns in some songs. The first two-thirds of the album are filled with catchy songs and rockin' jams like My Sweet Lord, Wah-Wah, The Art Of Dying, and All Things Must Pass. The last third of the album is a set of studio jams with guest artists like Eric Clapton.

    [0] Animals - Pink Floyd
The darkest and gloomiest of the Pink Floyd albums this one was almost a story of sorts. Questioning society and the inherent flaws in human nature. The album opens and closes with two parts of Pigs on the Wing. It seems to be saying that although society is a death trap of immoralities and although evil might be lurking behind every corner, together we can make it through it. Dogs comes in, epic in every sense of the word. This song reminds me of traveling on empty two lane highways late at night with only the moon to brighten the night sky. Then comes Sheep, the most jamming song on the album, a song about mindless pawns.

    -Honorable Mentions-
    Who's Next - The Who
  • Top 10 Albums (1960-1969)

    28 Feb 2008, 2:09

Well, I'm going to go through each decade up to the double zeros. Then I'll do an overall list.

[9] Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) - The Kinks
This was actually written to be a soundtrack to a television play, but the play was canceled during production. Shangri-La is one of the best tracks on the album, the styling similar to Lola.

[8] The Doors - The Doors
Their debut and best album in my opinion. Light My Fire is a thing of beauty.

[7] Are You Experienced? - Jimi Hendrix
This took the world by storm with bluesy electric guitar and a plethora of feedback. Tracks such as Foxy Lady, Hey Joe, Purple Haze, and The Wind Cries Mary where the highlights for me.

[6] In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Man this is like the beginning of the wonderful albums from Yes and Pink Floyd to come. The best progressive rock album of the 60's. Tracks that stand out in my mind are 21st Century Schizoid Man and The Court of the Crimson King. This is a must listen if you're a Floyd fan.

[5] Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
Largely considered the best album these guys put out, it was and still is a major influence on musicians. Sir Paul claimed Sgt. Peppers was actually inspired by this album. You can here a lot of current day albums from Panda Bear and Animal Collective that sound a lot like this. Every song on this album is gold, this was way ahead of its time.

[4] The Beatles - The Beatles
The first of the Beatles albums to appear on this list. Most commonly known as "The White Album", it was a melting pot of styles and themes. Had they worked together and let Harrison have a little more input it could have placed higher on this list. With more excellent tracks than time to list them, this albums greatest song was Helter Skelter.

[3] Led Zeppelin II - Led Zeppelin
Bluesy psychedelic heaven times a million. Everything is great, I can't find a single imperfection. Moby Dick has probably one of my favorite drum solos ever. What Is and What Should Never Be is probably my favorite track on the album.

    [2] Revolver - The Beatles
The Beginning of the what I call the golden age for the Beatles. You start to see Harrison's writing style come through with Tax Man, which is one of my top Beatles songs. This was the first psychedelic album from the Beatles, Tomorrow Never Knows is a stand out in that category.

[1] Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
A neat concept where the Beatles create a band persona. I wish I could have both this and the next tied at the top, but a ranked list is well.. ranked. Almost every song on this album is a classic, the first time I listened I recognized every song having listened to it as a boy. A Day in the Life is magic, a song touched by the hand of god.

[0] Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles
Yes another Beatles album, this one was actually only released as an LP in the US. Strings! Ohh I love strings in rock songs, Penny Lane, Hello Goodbye, and All You Need Is Love exhibited these godly arrangements. Then you have the wonderfully psychedelic songs Blue Jay Way, I Am the Walrus, and Strawberry Fields. A lot of you might think that Sgt. Peppers beats this, but overall this album just barely out does Sgt. Peppers.

    -Honorable Mentions-
    Tommy - The Who
    Electric Mud - Muddy Waters
  • Top 5 Beatles Albums

    5 Dic 2007, 21:44

They have so many, Here is what I think.

    1. Magical Mystery Tour
-I love the psychedelic feel to this album. The first time I listened to it my head exploded with awe. What can I say? I have a weakness for strings in rock songs. You have the most psychedelic tracks in this one like Blue Jay Way, but the beautiful string rock songs like All You Need is Love and Penny Lane.

    2. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
-This one is incredibly good, not one song on this album isn't worth listening to. With tracks like A Day in the Life and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds you won't be disappointed. I wish I could include this and the previous albums at the top spot as they were recorded at the same time.

    3. Revolver
-I love the Eastern culture feel that came through on this album with tracks like Tax Man and Tomorrow Never Knows.

    4. The Beatles
-I know a lot of people will crucify me for saying this, but I think this could have been shortened to 15-20 songs easily. Then it would have been legendary. It has songs like Bungalow Bill and Revolution 1 with underlying messages ant then songs like Helter Skelter which is just a complete jam.

    5. Let It Be... Naked
-The first version of this is gross, the "wall of sound" was completely worthless. But this version is raw, it sounds like The Beatles.

*What is your favorite lyric that 5 has sung?
    -Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell
    Heaven from Hell,
    Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
    From a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
    Your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
    We're just two lost souls
    Swimming in a fish bowl,
    Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found?
    The same old fears.

    Eerie whispers
    Trapped beneath my pillow
    You won't let me see
    Your memories

And I know you're in this room
I'm sure I heard you sigh
    Floating in between
    Where our worlds collide

It scares the hell out of me
And the end is all I can see
And it scares the hell out of me
And the end is all I can see

    Yeah yeah yeah ....

And I know the moment's near
And there's nothing we can do
    Look through a faithless eye
    Are you afraid to die?

It scares the hell out of me
And the end is all I can see
And it scares the hell out of me
And the end is all I can see

    Yeah yeah yeah ....

It scares the hell out of me
And the end is all I can see
And it scares the hell out of me
And the end is all I can see

    Yeah yeah yeah ....
