Symphonic Metal

"I say a band is whatever genre they choose to call themselves." <-- so that applies even when the band is wrong? i mean... if a death metal band said they were post-rock, i wouldn't admit it even if my life depended on it.

I mentioned the orchestra because usually people also like more "bombastic" sounds. I like The Odyssey by Symphony X and I recognize the complexity behind it, but if you are more like a "casual" listener, you will want to listen to something more bombastic. Never the less, I understand your point. And thanks for mentioning Nota Profana, I will check that out :P.

I don't think pg666donegan was referring to Symphony X or Ayreon, who, BTW, are musically much more challenging and creative than Within Temptation or Nightwish, nevermind the Holopainen cultists. The use or non-use of a full orchestra has nothing to do with compositional quality. "The Odyssey" is an awesome piece of music as it stands even if Symphony X could not afford a real orchestra for it. Listen to Nota Profana - that's how a convincing fusion between metal and classical is done, with no compromises for the musically uneducated masses.

Depends on what you have listened. For what I have seen, you have listened to Symphony X and Ayreon, pg666donegan. I am not a fan of neither, and while they are good, I don't exactly love them. You should listen to other stuff that does have powerful Symphonic elements. Nightwish's Dark Passion Play and Once use a full orchestra, specially DPP. Therion is highly symphonic as well starting on their 3rd (or 4th?) album. Within Temptation's Dark Force is highly Symphonic, so is their live album called Black Symphony. I do not know what other Symphonic Metal bands you have listened to, pg666donegan, but the two I have seen when I checked your profile are more Power Metal than Symphonic Metal. Personally I get bored of power metal too frequently, with some exceptions like Fairyland, and to like it again I have to leave it for a while and then listen to it again, maybe you have similar tendencies?

It cracks me up when somebody listens to maybe one or two songs of a genre, then blanket statements the entire genre as crap, boring, etc.

"I say a band is whatever genre they choose to call themselves." Not really. Any band can claim to be anything, but many of them even make up imaginary genres like "love metal" for PR reasons that have no informational value at all. [2]

Genres are there to organise the overwhelming variety of human creations. It's not even that hard to understand metal genres, they are based on features typical for the style and useful because the general mood is also quite different between, say, a slow, oppressive, crushing, spooky or atmospheric/psychedelic doom metal piece and a fast, upbeat, catchy sing-along power metal piece that makes you want to go slay some dragons. :P

I say a band is whatever genre they choose to call themselves. Within Temptation and Evanescence have both stated that they are not gothic, so it would make sense to NOT classify them as such.

As for Epica, they're a huge stylistic mix, so "symphonic metal" is the only description that no-one can argue with. But for gothic metal their music is far too fast most of the time I'd say. The guitars and drums sound more like melodic death metal, and there are the grunts, of course. ("Incentive" puts the focus on this more.) AF, the "mother band" of Epica, started out as a death metal project actually. I think that both the music of AF and Epica is too extreme and dissonant in the metal (guitar) parts to qualify as "pure" power metal, which is more melodic. The melody comes rather from keys, orchestrations, choir, and lead vocals. It's surprising to listen to the guitars alone and realise how "brutal" they are, especially compared to more melodic power/speed-metal oriented bands like the Finnish ones. I find the sonic impression, the whole band sound, to be totally different.
