Bullshit, I wouldn't have discovered half the stuff I listened to if it weren't for musically dissimilar artists getting grouped arbitrarily into media-generated boxes. Asking "what sounds like X" will just get you stuff that sounds like X, whereas asking "what is grouped into the same arbitrary category as X" is more likely to surprise you with different stuff (where X is a generic moniker, like post-rock or industrial, that includes a bunch of things that don't sound alike). For example, if I like Autechre, asking "what sounds kinda like Autechre" is going to get me mostly stuff that sounds kinda like Autechre, whereas asking "what is some other good idm-type stuff" is going to get me stuff that sounds kinda like Autechre, in addition to other great artists like The Orb or Boards of Canada, which sound nothing like Autechre.

I only found out about Low, Codeine and Bedhead by clicking on the slowcore tag out of curiosity from the Galaxie500 page. I know Low hate the term, but I think it's a useful tag, and the bands all fit the description well. If they'd been tagged indie I'd probably never discovered them.

If you don't like the way people tag genres, just don't subscribe to it and ignore it. It doesn't really make a difference, each band will sound different, some sound more similar to others that's all. I don't say 'Hey I love Red House Painters, time to check out every Slowcore band ever', I say 'Hey I love Red House Painters, time to check out bands that might sound similar to them in the hope I can find another band I like.' Using genres to pigeonhole things just works better for some people in helping them find out what they might like, but for people with more experimental music tastes, it gets less relevant and mundane the further you go. Also, CA_Punker i'm pretty sure Shitcore does exist much to your dismay.
