Medieval

IMHO, artist who perform original medieval pieces should be tagged as "medieval", and all the rest, who either make new versions of older songs and pieces or incorporate them into their own music, whatever genre it may be, should be tagged as "neo-medieval".

This wiki made me laugh. None of the bands I see here are heavy metal at all.

Yeah, whats the point in over classifying music? Just enjoy it. If Blackmore's night is not really Medievil, no one is going to do die cause of it, are they?

I mostly agree, and I love both medieval (early) and neomedieval music. But stop overreacting about tags, because this battle with windmills is useless. You cannot convince the people now, after years, to change their tags. Go to or smth. Many tags here are nonsense, including alternative and gothic.

Yeah, I think we all agree that Blackmore's Night, Tanzwut, Enya, Gentle Giant, Satyricon etc. are not medieval music. It's just that new age, darkwave, neofolk, black metal etc. music which refers to some romanticized "ancient times" in lyrics or song names, is massively more popular among last.fm users (mostly teenagers and young adults) than actual medieval era music. I'm pretty sure Blackmore's Night or Enya don't claim themselves to be medieval at all.

Read the post I made here. Medieval is a generic term, most of the bands I see here are NOT true medieval music anyway. I see a lot of ambient/darkwave/rock or metal bands, and artists like Tanzwut or Letzte Instanz have nothing to do here, they only have a few songs slightly influenced by medieval music, so I don't understand the people who tag them as medieval. Neomedieval is something different, it could fit most of these artists, I guess. If you're bothered by the way the medieval tag is used, then try the tag early music for more accuracy.

I always tag modern artists doing mediaeval-influenced music as "neomediaeval" (though I recently found out I am apparently the ONLY person on Last.fm who uses the non-American spelling of that word, so I suppose I will have to change my tags). But it seems like very few other people do -- even with the US spelling, the "neomedieval" tag has only a tiny fraction of the uses that "medieval" has. Unfortunately, there's no quick and easy way to change that -- that's the problem with a user-driven system like this; the tags are assigned by users, not by Last.fm themselves, so there's really no top-down solution available.

i never use "medieval" because it doesn't mean anything and it's already misused for different styles of contemporary popular music. even early music of the middle ages spans a time frame of 1,000 years which is nearly the same when pigeonholing it together with renaissance and baroque music as "early" only. if people don't know much about music of the romanesque or gothic era, about byzantine plainchant, early polyphony, troubadours, trecento or ars subtilior, they won't distinguish. but that would make the difference. in fact, usage and spreads of words and meanings is a social phenomenon, we individuals use words we learned from society and give them our understanding. the understanding of "medieval" differs widely. and so is the understanding of music. all you can do is enjoy and be openminded.

Listening to the 'early music' tag radio now, it's far more accurate for genuine medieval music. Stuff like In Extremo etc should be tagged NeoMedieval.
