  • Mind-blowingly good (and free) electronica on last.fm!

    3 Mar 2009, 17:42 de daintyrecords

Modesty prevents Dainty Records from drawing attention to Own It Hard, the new release from its very own electronica act Plush Concept out this week. Instead Dainty would like to take the opportunity to highlight some of the astoundingly good and (currently) free electronica on last.fm. Here are eight top trumps:

    moduretik (Czechoslovakia)
Punchy breaks bound along closely followed by strong, minimal synth lines that in turn herald the arrival of pumpy melodies all blooming into an energetic carousel ride of irreverent glee … put a massive smile on my face and deserves a great deal more attention.

    Sample tracks:
    Escucharblunder
    Escucharhezké dobré jitro

    Beatslaughter (Germany)
Once in a while you’re are literally blown away by how good some of this horrifically under sung talent is. Beatlaughter's The Reckless Pursuit of Utopia is classic electronica with a nice contemporary feel while Machinery Torment must be one of the very few tracks that could genuinely qualify as ambient gabba – dark, caustic, dramatic, urgent… There’s definitely an overall old skool feel to the tracks - which aren’t afraid to tackle different categories of electronica - but the quality is both consistent and immediately obvious and as a result the tracks are pretty timeless.

    Sample tracks:
    EscucharThe Reckless Pursuit Of Utopia
    EscucharMachinery Torment

    Quantazelle (USA)
Hmm… the unfortunate thing here is that this track isn’t free anymore but still deserves a mention, I feel. Brevity prevails in this nicely paced initially Arovane-esque classic piece of downtempo idm but the scrunchy beats and lightness of touch lend this an excitingly modern feel. The full track is still available for streaming.

    Sample track:
    EscucharLate Blazing Kinch Theme

    gay against you (Scotland)
    1. I can’t believe their music is free (I don’t think it will be for too much longer) 2. Despite their deserved cult following I still can’t believe that this lot aren’t the hottest band on the planet. Short bursts of hilariously Dadaist electro mess that's fun, clever, technically astounding and perfectly healthy… don’t think drill n bass, don’t think nu rave, don’t think electroclash, don’t think electronica. Just think… Um, Hello?! GAY!!!

    Sample tracks:
    EscucharHello
    EscucharIce Scooter
    EscucharPrincess Diana Walkman

    hautlle (USA)
The prefixes ‘emotional elctronica’ and ‘organic electronica’ worry me quite a lot. What is meant by them exactly? If one means electronica that is emotive and sounds organic (whether or not this is the process by which it has been made or not) then Hautle would, for me, be an excellent example of both of these things. The track in question clunks along like a rusty oil can full of car parts and broken glass rolling across an open landscape - both rhythmic and naturalistic - accompanied by the low howl of airy synths blowing like the wind through overhead telegraph wires. Then the melody cuts in – a desperately lonely staccato joined only by an organ’s mournful wail, the whole thing gradually building into a scratch-chorus of desolation… I felt extremely moved by the whole thing.

    Sample track:
EscucharIf You Were Me, and I Was Someone Else

    ASP (asmallsimpleplan) (USA)
A knowingly retro feel to this music immediately puts this listener in mind of Warp’s ground breaking artificial intelligence series from the early nineties which is bound to please a secret old skool raver like me, but there’s more - much more - going on here. The basslines are dark and chunky, the beats clean and crisp, the melodies fluid and ethereal and the rhythms complex and syncopated. This means business and sounds very fresh indeed.

    Sample tracks:
    EscucharHypnotique
    EscucharClockwatchers

    Blit (Portugal)
Chirpy, quirky and likably eccentric, in some ways Blit recall the Niun Niggung era Mouse on Mars – except that I prefer Blit. There is a jazzy feel here and there, but don’t let that put you off! This manages to be jaunty and enjoyable while never appearing frivolous or frothy. The sound collages are textured and sophisticated, providing space for the glitches, parps and squeeks to do their thing.

    Sample tracks:
    EscucharEl loco no soy yo
    Escucharhierba mate

    Sevish (United Kingdom)
Returning home from our grand tour of global electronica, Sevish’s drum n bass breaks are amazing but this isn’t just dance music, it has a definite experimental edge too. I was very taken by this short number that draws a nice close to this little virtual mixtape.

    Sample tracks
    EscucharA Bridge

    Thanks for reading...
    keept it fragile, dainty x

  • 10 chiptune songs that are better than Sabrepulse or Bit Shifter

    13 Ago 2008, 22:58 de lukejonesyes

Don't get me wrong, I like Sabrepulse and Bit Shifter as much as the next chiptune fan (see how I discreetly added them as connections to get more people to read this), but I'm in a mood right now where I find their unashamedly joyful musical stylings unctuous and cheesy. Worse still, their popularity has spawned equally corny cookie-cutter acts in the 8-bit community. With this this list I want to prove that Gameboy-type music can be done differently.

DJ Scotch Egg - EscucharScotch Kids (I would have put the moderately superior
EscucharScotch Grime but it's not free, so it can die of AIDS quite frankly)
    Zan-zan-zawa-veia - EscucharLest Thou
Aleksi Eeben - EscucharGround Expansion (Or, if you have the patience, EscucharThe Grand Rules.)
Mr. Spastic - EscucharSpastic Break Fest
Germlin - Youth Pixxell (Featuring guest vocals from a certain Mr. Scotch Egg)
gay against you - EscucharPrincess Diana Walkman
Role Model - Escucharpop5 (see Mr. Bit Shifter? You can do bitpop with subtlety.)
Coleco Music - EscucharHoney, We Are Chatting
Crystal Castles - EscucharAir War (Ignore the fact that they are popular amongst the indie/dance crowd, ignore the fact that they sampled a single thump on a drum machine from another artist's song and didn't attribute, just, and I know this is downright weird, but JUST LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, and stop letting such trivial matters interfere with your enjoyment of music, or anything else for that matter.)
YTCracker - EscucharN.E.S. (There is a particular melody in this song which is brilliant. However, the large majority of 8-bit rap is terrible.)

Oh fuck it, two great ones from the offending bastards in the title:
    EscucharHexadecimal Genome
    EscucharPurple Haze

[this is all the fault of sunkeneyedgirl [grin]...]

Get your overall top 10 artists from Last.fm, and find the top 3 of their tracks that you've played the most on your ipod/Media Player. Then see where it comes in that artist's "most-played" lists. The lower the track in the list, the weirder you are...or something to that effect.

    Habitual Inmate - 4th
    We're All Going to Hell - 1st
    Everyone Has a Secret - 8th

  • Brainlove Festival pt II

    12 Jun 2008, 16:24 de TomG88

    Brainlove Festival London part 2:
So, after a trip to the nearest shop that would provide them with chips (in this case liberally soaked in curry sauce, mmmmm) our intrepid band of audiophiles return to the castle of wonders that is the Brainlove Festival London…

Our heroes were then confronted by the tail end of Tim Ten Yen’s set. Throughout this I have been using the word pop with absolutely no justification or qualification to mean ‘sort of light hearted, jolly, not rock’ etc but Tim Ten Yen is closest of all the artists I saw to the genre description of ‘pop’ as I see it. (the genre normal people can enjoy, rather than anything that you might actually have seen on top of the pops). His lyrics were all about love and girls, and mostly upbeat and light hearted. Back this up with simple, happy, fully recorded backing tracks (his live performance was mostly him and a mic) and fantastic dancing routines, combined with a very dapper suit, and you have Tim Ten Yen, a modern day pop success. Possibly a little too lightweight to interest me in the long term, but great listening for that sunny day. Check out ‘When The Song Applies To You’

Next up was Pagan Wanderer Lu, the reason I know who Brainlove Records are and my personal favourite of all their artists. I was excited to see him for the 4th time, but this excitement was tempered with the fact that due to the laptop driven nature of his live work PWL shows can often be quite similar both to his records and his other live performances. Not so today however, as PWL took to the stage armed only with acoustic guitar and two backing artists, a violinist and a girl on melodica/ backing vocal duties. This was to be a Pagan Wanderer Lu and the Volunteers gig, his occasional backing band, who I had never seen live. The sound was so different (and I think possibly the sound man had got the levels wrong a bit at first) that I’m not sure I even enjoyed the opening song The Gentleman’s Game, because I so love the electronic laptop version… However the set rapidly improved as I settled in to this different style, which showcases even further PWL’s lyrical skills, and I was especially happy to hear many less common and older songs which would have been out of place in a more electronic set, all of which I had never heard live. This included some acoustic songs from the now recorded new album, which sounded great too. Then came a 15 minute section of PWL on his own with his acoustic guitar. At this point occurred my best moment of the day, when PWL asked for acoustic requests and I asked for a song he’d forgotten he’d written. Nonetheless, it was one he said he was glad I’d requested because he’d been trying to think of acoustic songs he’d written earlier to fill the slot and hadn’t come up with many… With a friendly ‘if I forget the chords, it’s his fault’ he played it through perfectly. The Volunteers returned to the stage for a finale of The Memorial Hall (the best version I have ever heard of this oft recorded song) and Knight-King 4, which was also incredible due to the brilliant harmonised round added to the end of the song. A brilliant, unusual PWL set.

Following PWL was Brainlove star Napoleon IIIrd who had also equipped himself with a band for the occasion. As with my previous encounter I was distracted by PWL’s set, but Napoleon IIIrd in this new, rockier and more lively configuration really was very good. He is similar to but less political than PWL, and has a much less acoustic sound. As before, great, anthemic music, (especially Hit Schmooze For Me, check out the video!) but not quite great enough to make me want to buy albums from him.

Rudely interrupting the theme of good songwriting and tunes was the hilariously outfitted drunken rabble with a drum machine of Le Couteau Jaune. Less a musical performance, more a theatrical affair, the band leapt, screamed, gyrated and fell on the floor to weird noises, synths and rapid drumbeats. No idea what they sound like normally, but it was fun to watch (and indeed occasionally become a participant in) the band’s random attacks on members of the audience, culminating with about 5 of us in a pile on the floor on top of members of the band…

And so, after much waffle I come to the evening’s headliners, gay against you. Having been primed by my previous experience of them I was not disappointed, and once again their performance was a masterful combination of silly clothing, amusing on-stage banter and absolutely brilliant drum machine, synth and guitar led musical mayhem, providing ample opportunity for band directed dancing, gesturing and general hyperactive moshing and jumping. It is in the nature of a GvsY set that I don’t really remember a single song but just an overwhelming sensation of fun and crazy dancing. And sweat too. A GvsY live experience will blow away your cobwebs and leave you with a massive grin, even if you’re not sure why. The only song I ever remember by name is the brilliantly titled ‘Gay Unicorn’, but search for youtube clips of it as the recorded versions sound often tame in comparison.

All in all an utterly fantastic time was had, the festival was full of great music with hardly a moment’s gap, in a cool venue on a very fine day. And only £8 too! Brainlove Records, long may you continue finding new and exciting things for my ears and feet.
