Windy & Carl are an ambient space rock group based in Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A.
Overview
Cited as «A leading light of the Michigan space-rock scene» by All Music Guide, the minimalist group formed in 1991 around the core husband-and-wife duo of guitarist Carl Hultgren and bassist/singer Windy Weber. (Most of the band’s pieces feature no vocals, however.) The band was prolific from the outset up to 2001, whereupon they took a hiatus of a few years.
The music of Windy & Carl borrows heavily from the sounds of 1980s era bands on 4AD Records, specifically that of Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins and various other dream pop and shoegazer acts.
Unlike noteworthy prior drone/ambient artists (such as Cluster, Brian Eno, Popol Vuh, et al), Windy & Carl’s drones are primarily derived from guitar, particularly via usage of delay effects, reverb effects, and E-Bow, rather than synthesizers. Another noteworthy aspect of W&C’s sound is the absence of drums.
History
They self-released their cassette-only debut album Portal on their label, Blue Flea, in 1992; it was later reissued on CD. In 1994, the duo briefly expanded to a quartet, featuring percussionist Brenda Markovich and guitarist/keyboardist Randall Nieman. They recorded under the Once Dreamt moniker, and released the Drifting EP and Drawing Of Sound album in 1996. After the release of the recording, both Markovich and Nieman departed, with the latter moving on to form Füxa.

@ Moonsilence_de: Windy knows she's a questionable singer and only put her voice on the tracks at the urging of her husband, Carl. Otherwise she feels slightly embarrassed. But I disagree that her voice ruins a song. There's depth in it that mirrors what she does on the bass, and she knows how to work well within her limitations (i.e., you don't hear her throwing her voice all over the place, or trying to harmonize with herself, or even placing it really high in the mix, with the exception of early singles and a couple tracks on "Songs for the Broken Hearted").

I wouldn't say this is an all time classic, but it is pretty damn solid. very relaxing and the sonics are great; windy isn't the best singer but she is adequate for the job at hand

I've always had a certain issue with Windy & Carl. They create the most beautiful, meditative and deep string & drone ambient soundsscapes I know of, but when Windy starts with vocals, the track is slighty ruined. She is just not that good a singer, her voice is totally mediocre. Admit it. Plenty of examples on Consciousness and Depths. Seriously, I'd prefer her to just s*** up. But she can't help it and feels the urge to prove her singing... uh... skills.
