  • 2009 review

Albums of the year - 2009
Two ratings, one for the album, one for the album compared to average of artist's previous albums. Mostly just for me to come back to next year to have a look.

    LPs

    1) dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion, 10/10 - 8.5/10
Most poppy of their albums but it’s still fucking amazing.
    2) Muse- The Resistance, 9/10 – 7.5/10
    Exogenesis <3
    3) Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue 8.5/10 - 8/10
Not quite up there with Dirt and EPs, but it’s growing on me.
    4) Amorphis – Skyforger, 8/10 – 8/10
    5) AFI - Crash Love, 7.5/10 - 8/10
One of my fav AFI albums. I thought they were full-on going emo after Decemberunderground, but luckily they decided to write a decent rock record
    6) Placebo- Battle For The Sun 7/10 - 6/10
    6) Porcupine Tree - The Incident, 7/10 - 6/10
    7) The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die, 7/10 - 7/10
    9) N.A.S.A. - The Spirit of Apollo, 7/10
Good bunch of collaborations with decent artists. It works.
    10) K'naan – Troubadour, 7/10 - 6/10
Much shorter and not as good as The Dusty Foot Philosopher, but has some good songs (my favs – Wavin Flag, Fire In Firetown, I Come Prepared, Fatima)

    EPs.

    1) Puscifer- "C" Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE), 10/10 - 10/10. (The new 3 tracks are pretty much the best Puscifer tracks)
    2) Massive Attack - Splitting The Atom, 8/10 - 8/10 (3 really good songs and1 really boring one- Bulletproof Love)
    3) RJD2 - Tin Foil Hat, 6.5/10 - 6/10 (fav track - Thine Planetarium)
    4) Modest Mouse - No One's First, And You're Next, 6/10 – 4/10 (it is a collection of B-sdies hence why it’s not that good)

    Pretty Decent LPs

Katatonia - Night Is The New Day (need to listen to this more)
    Imogen Heap - Ellipse
    k-os - YES!
    Norah Jones - The Fall
Weezer – Ratitude (usual weezer immaturity)
    Owl City - Ocean Eyes
Billy Talent - Billy Talent III (solid catchy album as usual)
Chali 2na - Fish Outta Water
Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings (need to listen to more)
Dub Pistols - Rum & Coke
Eminem – Relapse (never gonna match SS or MM Lps but not bad)
    Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
    Zero 7 - Yeah Ghost
    Ziggy Marley - Family Time
Jazz Liberatorz – Fruits of the Past (random good find, jazzy hip-hop)
Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: The End Of Day (pretty good for mainstream hip-hop. Whole album is pretty good)
    Metric– Fantasies
The Sounds - Crossing The Rubicon
Tech N9ne – Sickology 101 (pretty angry lyrics but he can rhyme pretty damn well)
Awol One & Factor – Owl Hours
The Crystal Method – Divided By Night

Ones that should have been much better

    311 - Uplifter
    Air - Love 2
Lacuna Coil – Shallow Life (really forgettable)
Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures (eh.. guys, it doesn’t work especially well. Let’s get back to Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and retirement)
Street Sweeper Social Club - Street Sweeper Social Club (a lot of it blends into one, maybe I’m just pissed it’s not RATM)
Elysian Fields –The Afterlife (maybe I need to listen to it more, but not especially liking this one)
Dizze Rascal - Tongue N' Cheek (only a few ok songs, the others are puke-inducing - Holiday, Leisure, etc)

    The utter anal crap

    Chris Cornell – Scream

Pretty good year for music. The top 10, especially top 3 made it a pretty excellent year.

  • Because I'm that bored.

    13 Dic 2009, 8:19 de wakindreamz

    1. What's your favorite song by #15 (Alexisonfire)?
    - We Are The End, Boiled Frogs, and EscucharThis Could Be Anywhere In The World.

    2. How did you get into #20 (Poison the Well)?
    - EscucharNerdy was playing in the background at a friends house one night. I just had to know who that was.

    3. Who is your favorite member in #1 (In Flames)?
    - Anders Fridén, his voice = love.

    4. Whats your favorite lyric bit by #29 (Foo Fighters)?
    - "What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
    You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?"

    5. Have you ever seen #22 (Incubus) live?
    - Yep. It was a very good birthday present a few years back.

    6. What's your favorite album from #10 (Atreyu)?
    - The Curse

    7. Do you own any merchandise from #3 (Deftones)?
    - A few shirts, there's a hoodie around here somewhere. Lots and lots of CDs and a DVD, if those count.

    8. What is a good memory you have of #7 (Swift)?
    - My god, there's so many. The Tavern and every memory made there. Standing at the front of every show. Riding back from one of said shows, in a 98 Eclipse, going over 100 for some unknown reason, but he was in the back seat with me holding my hand while EscucharThe Search was playing. It was cute at the time, lol.

    9. Is there a member of the same age as you in #2 (Nine Inch Nails)?
    - Nope.

    10. When did you first get into #8 (System of a Down)?
    - In middle school. EscucharSugar was my shit, haha.

    11. Who likes #4 (Five Finger Death Punch) along with you?
    - Dustin was the one that opened me up to these guys. And I guess the 132 thousand other listeners, lol.

    12. Which song did you first hear from #16 (The Smashing Pumpkins)?
    - EscucharZero, duh. So angst-y at the time, lmao.

    13. What song made you fall in love with #5 (Seether)?
    - EscucharThe Gift

    14. Which song do you not like by #18 (Shiny Toy Guns)?
    - Sky Fell Over Me is sorta bad.

    15. Why do you like #14's (Chevelle) songs?
    - The band itself flows nicely together. Pete Loeffler has a way of saying what needs to be said, but in a different way than most writers.

    16. Where did you first hear #6 (Radiohead)?
    - I... borrowed, my friends OK Computer CD. Couldn't get enough after that.

    17. How long was #19 (Slipknot) a band before you liked them?
    - A band? No idea. I started listening to them when Wait and Bleed came out.

    18. Does #13 (Queens of the Stone Age) have a song that gives you a bad memory?
    - Not really, no.

    19. When did you get into #17 (Staind)?
    - EscucharMudshovel. Lol. Still, to this day, I can listen to that song on repeat.

    20. How long have you been into #9 (As I Lay Dying)?
    - Only about a year or so.

    21. If #11 (Muse) had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them?
    - To be completely honest, no, lol.

    22. How many CDs do you own of #12 (City and Colour)?
    - 5. Thank you, Darren. <3

    23. Does #21 (Sublime) have a song that makes you cry?
    - No way, it's Sublime.

    24. Does #27 (Cold) have a song that makes you happy?
    - I don't know about happy. If only these last two questions were reversed, lol.

    25. Does #23 (School for Heroes) have a song that makes you smile?
    - In a way, yes. Mainly because listening to SFH brings back good memories. Ziggy's was fun, boys.

    26. What's the last song you've listened to from #28 (Weezer)?
    - Probably This Is Such a Pity.

    27. Is there a song by #32 (Paramore) that you've listened to more than 30 times?
    - Almost. Apparently I've listened to Stuck on You 22 times.

    28. What is a song from #50 (Finch) that you've only listened to once?
    - What It Is to Burn. Crappy song, imo.

    29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by #24 (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)?
    - Nope.

    30. What song got you into #40 (Stone Temple Pilots)?
    - EscucharCreep :D

    31. What is your favorite single by #25 (Marilyn Manson)?
    - Single... probably EscucharThe Beautiful People. It still has that wanna-break-shit riff to me.

    32. If #49 (Fear Factory/The Postal Service) hated you, what would you do?
    - Tell them to write a song about it and get over it? I don't know.

    33. What would you say if one of the members from #42 (Kings of Leon) asked you out?
    - Nah, I'm good? Again, I don't know, lol.

    34. Would you care if #41 (Coldplay) had a boyfriend/girlfriend?
    - No? These questions are getting sort of stupid.

    35. Who has the best voice in #46 (Bush)?
    - Gavin Rosedale, adur.

    36. Do you think #26 (Lamb of God) is/are good-looking?
    - Meh, not really.

    37. How many times have you listened to your favorite song by #36 (A Perfect Circle)?
    - 41 times, according to my charts.

    38. How many CDs do you own of #30 (Primer 55)?
    - None, only a few random Mp3s.

    39. Is there a song from #38 (Mindless Self Indulgence) that makes you mad?
    - Not mad, no. It's hard to place an emotion to these guys. The lyrical content is sometimes dark, but the music is always... bouncy? I don't know how you would describe that, lol.

    40. Which member from #31 (Rage Against the Machine) do you want to see go solo?
    - Um, none. I want to see them get back together.

    - No one really.

    42. Did you hate #43 (Story of the Year) at first?
    - Not hate, but it still takes me awhile to appreciate some of their songs.

    43. Does your best friend also listen to #33 (Fiona Apple)?
    - I'm sure she has at one point in time.

    44. Do you think your parents would like #37 (Feist)?
    - My Mom might, not really my Dad's flavor, lol. He's more into everything from 1 to 36.

    45. Does #47 (Soulfly) have a song that makes you want to dance?
    - Is being crushed in a mosh pit considered dancing? Regardless, no.

    46. Have you ever seen #34 (Tiësto) in person?
    - Nah.

    47. Do you like #44's (Pogo) name?
    - It works, for the type of music.

    48. Is there someone in #45 (Depeche Mode) that you want to go out with?
    - Stupid question is stupid.

    49. Do you know anyone that hates #39 (Drugstore Fanatics)?
    - Don't really know anyone else that has listened to them.

    50. Have you ever danced to a song from #35 (Ferry Corsten)?
    - No, lol.

  • Year in Revision: 2008

    12 Dic 2009, 8:26 de DreadfulHero

Here it is, folks: The last blast from the past. I think I should call this entry "2009: The Place that Albums from 2008 Go to Die." Truth is, I've listened to a lot less music this year than in recent years (probably from '04-'08, at least). And when I have listened to music, it's mostly been to the same handful of albums that will undoubtedly make my top 10 or so albums of the year. While I can rank albums from 2000-2007 due to how I've come to look at all of them over a longer period of time, I haven't given 2008's album much a second thought since the year ended. And so, this year probably won't factor much into my best albums of the decade (two might. We'll see). There have been a few changes, however.

    1. The Stills - Oceans Will Rise

    2. Elbow- The Seldom Seen Kid

    3. Blood Red Shoes - Box Of Secrets

    4. Weezer - Weezer (Red Album Deluxe)

    5. My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges

    6. Copeland - You Are My Sunshine

    7. Lovedrug - The Sucker Punch Show

    8. The Hush Sound - Goodbye Blues

    9. Paper Rival - Dialog

    10. Earlimart - Hymn And Her

Stay tuned for my Best of 2009 list, which I suspect will have about 15 albums. If only I had more time to let things digest, I might be able to stretch it to 20. C'est la vie! And after that, I will publish some of my favorite songs of the year, with a link included to a zip file of the listed tracks. And then... the best albums of the decade (wish me luck!). And the best songs of the decade (wish me even more luck!)

Black Cascade - Wolves in the Throne Room
Black metal with a little depression thrown in.

split - Alcest and Les Discrets
    track 1
Peppy post-metal with female death metal vocals in french - meh.
    track 2
Lovely male vocalizing with no lyrics.
    The rest:
Jangly guitars that sound familiar combined with floaty, shoegaze-like vocals.

    Primary Colours - The Horrors
80's brit pop with 70's psych rock influences.
It really doesn't sound like this album came out this year. I'm getting tired of this "let's copy older artists, only let's do it badly" routine that so many bands are doing now.

The Divinity of Oceans - Ahab
I think they've grown since their last release.
There's more operatic singing, less of the deep, earth shaking vocals, and the addition of lovely, monk-like singing.

    I was a King - I Was A King
Indie pop, I can hear White Album era Beatles. This is a female fronted band, and something about the vocals reminds me of Lush.

    Hilarious.
    Absu - Absu
Lightening fast black metal from Texas.
The music has some unintentional funny moments in it.

Why There are Mountains - Cymbals Eat Guitars
Like Cursive but even more angst.

To Lose My Life - White Lies
Slick 80's pop, too bad I'm pretty fed up with this sort of music lately.

    Terminal Static - Broken Note
Deliciously moody dnb, heavy emphasis on the B.
Want to try out your new sub-woofers? Pop this in and play track 1.

    Yankee Reality - Hush Arbors
Light indie rock/pop with high pitched vocals.
Doesn't sound so bad, does it? Well, it is. It's like Winnie the Pooh singing off key.
Oddly enough, their live bootlegs on youtube don't sound nearly so bad.

...At The Moment Of Our Most Needing - Rock Plaza Central
Neo-folk with a country tinge. The only thing about them that is similar to Neutral Milk Hotel is the trumpet. The singing ruins it for me, which is a real shame. Everything else about this album I like quite a bit. The instrumentals tracks are quite nice, at any rate.

    Dissolver - Iran
Boring indie rock, copying Weezer's trick of making songs with a 50's pop undertones.
The Franz Ferdinand-like vocals make this album go from mediocre to bad.

The Love Language - The Love Language
They hit their stride on the more upbeat songs, the songs that just beg you to to sway along and snap your fingers in tune to the music. There's nothing really new or special here, but it is enjoyable.

    The Great Cessation - YOB
    Stoner drone doom
The vocals occasionally come off as ridiculous. I should read the lyrics; I bet they're unintentionally hilarious.
