We left the earth in 1983, fingers groping for the galaxies
Reddened eyes stared up into the void, 1000 stars to be exploited
Somebody help me, I'm falling, somebody help me, I'm falling down
Into sky, into Earth, into sky, into Earth

Powerful lyrics on this one, great instrumentals too. Doesn't quite surpass Lost for me though. The album in its entirety is fantastic though.

The way the sax solo drifts out and then back (through clever use of reverb) is brilliant.

"Just a quick point - if you left the earth in 1983 and travelled at above the speed of light, wouldn't you get back before you left?" That's an intersting thought, I like that! So Hammill is basically talking about 1983 in the past tense from 1970 without any contradiction :)

I always loved this song. I love it when someone like Paul comes up with that kind of background stuff, I'm not sure I know the 'Vital' version but I will have to look it out.

I like the Vital version too, but it's hard to listen to without being reminded of the disaster with Jackson's track on the original 24 track master. In case you don't know, after the gig they found that Jackson's track was blank and Guy had to try and re-construct Jackson's sax from whatever sax he could find that had bled onto the other 23 tracks. I think that Guy did a wonderful job, but I always wonder what it would have sounded like if the track hadn't been lost.

The version of this on Vital is just fantastic, I think. Overlooked album. It may not be VDGG proper, but the weird lineup (cello and violin front and center) achieved a unique and explosive live sound unlike anything Hammill did before or since. I prefer this version to the original, personally. The live album rocks in a way that (excepting Nadir) Hammill &co. rarely do (and they rock without sacrificing complexity and nuance).

hein-duck-dich: The album title is about the fusion reaction that converts Hydrogen (H) to Helium (He). I think “Who am the only one” is a quote and it may be used here to suggest that in harnessing this nuclear energy we’ve decided that nothing else is important other than what we want, or maybe that we are seeking to make ourselves gods. The track title is a pun on over-sea/Over C. In this case C is the speed of light, so "Pioneers Over C" is about travelling faster than light. Ridiculously over-optimistic to say "We left the Earth in 1983".
