Formados en 1991 en Tumwater, situado en Olympia, Washington, Unwound fue originalmente un trío compuesto por Justin Trosper en guitarra y voces, Vern Rumsey al bajo y Brandt Sandeno a la batería (posteriormente sustituído por Sara Lund en 1992).

Están Influenciados básicamente por grupos como Can, Gang of Four, the Wipers y sobre todo por Sonic Youth, The Nation of Ulysses, Fugazi, Flipper, Big Black, Hüsker Dü…
