La historia fugaz de los United States of America tiene algo de sintomático de aquellos tiempos, de la gloriosa locura que había poseído a la industria; incluso a empresas tan sospechosas de conservadurismo como Columbia, que animada por el éxito de artistas a contracorriente y arriesgados como Byrds, Bob Dylan, Spirit, y un largo etcétera, entró en un periodo de fichajes alocados, de apuestas de riesgo. No todas rindieron frutos comerciales, pero juntas dibujan un catálogo lleno de tesoros como éste. Formados en 1967 alrededor del fatuo Joseph Byrd, cruelmente retratado por él mismo en las notas interiores como un tío insoportable, y por entonces un compositor introducido en los circuitos académicos y del Avant Garde y música contemporánea de Nueva York y de su antigua pareja sentimental Dorothy Moskowitz, trasladados a Los Angeles, y reunidos de nuevo con la sospechosa intención de formar un proyecto de rock.
Así, la formación de los United States Of America resultaba una conjunción de flores transplantadas del invernadero vanguardista a la selva pop sin mayor conocimiento de causa, imbuidos siempre de un cierto esnobismo. Acompañados por Gordon Marron al violín electrificado, Rand Forbes al bajo y Graig Woodson a las percusiones, con Byrd asumiendo los teclados y Moskowitz entonando en una cercanía evidente con Grace Slick de Jefferson Airplane

I just can't enough from this great band! the psychedelic soundscape is overwhelming and unique. but the power and ideas of the songs unfold themselves only bit by bit. besides, the lyrics are often somewhat risky and funny at the same time. "The American Metaphysical Circus" is surpassing!
