La génesis de la banda llegó con la reunión de Wheeler y el guitarrista David Gavurin en la Universidad de Bristol. Wheeler ha desempeñado conciertos con la banda de Jim Jiminee. El dúo pronto aumentada a la banda con el bajista Paul Brindley y el batería Patrick Hannan.
The Sundays recibierón un gran apoyo mediático por la prensa británica después de sus primeros conciertos en Londres en 1988, aprovechando las comparaciones con Cocteau Twins y The Smiths.
El primer single del grupo, «Can’t Be Sure», fue lanzado en 1989 y fue votado como el número uno en John Peel ‘s Festive Quincuagésimo ese año. La banda logró el éxito en 1990 con su álbum debut, lectura, escritura, aritmética y, que fué oro en el Reino Unido y EE.UU. posteriores álbumes de Ciegos (1992) y Static y silencio (1997) también fue oro en los Estados Unidos.
Gavurin formó una amistad con el comediante David Baddiel cuando crecían en el norte de Londres, lo que daría lugar a la prestación de The Sundays a la canción «Otra Sabores» (sin voz) de Static y silencio como la melodía del tema Newman y Baddiel en Pieces serie de TV .
La banda ha estado en un largo paréntesis desde el lanzamiento de Static y silencio; Wheeler y Gavurin están centrando su atención en la crianza de sus dos hijos.

@MamaLuigi, I can understand, but it is hard also to say that, cause Elizabeth literally doesn't have one voice! As Robin himself said "She has a library of voices" and each one is beautiful and other-worldly. While naturally Harriet got one voice, and it has this earthly quality to it (I mean it as a compliment of course). Harriet is up-there with the best female vocalists I've ever heard. Shame that most people think screaming and hitting high notes is a sign for a good vocalist.

@Sonicjr01, I think cause it is their easiest song to get into. I understand that if someone who isn't a fan of the band. But it is weird if someone who labels him self as a real fan of them and consider it their best or something, cause simply it is not theirs, and doesn't represent their sound. Songs like "Goodbye", "Here's Where The Story Ends" are the ones that do.
