The Sisters of Mercy es uno de los más importantes grupos de Rock Gótico (aunque a los miembros de la banda no les guste que les encuadren en esa categoria), formado en la época post-punk.
Han grabado tres álbumes de estudio, «First and last and always» (1985), «Floodland» (1987) y «Vision Thing» (1990), y dos recopilatorios, «Some girls wander by mistake» (1992), de su discográfica Merciful Records, y un grandes éxitos, «A slight case of overbombing». Dos de sus integrantes, Wayne Hussey y Craig Adams lanzaron además, como proyecto paralelo, la banda The Mission, mientras que Andrew Eldritch continuó la línea original con The Sisterhood.
En la época del «Floodland», la cantante y bajista Patricia Morrison se unió al grupo, haciendo algunas apariciones en vídeos de manera fugaz. Se dice que abandonó el grupo porque Eldritch no le pagó el dinero que le debía. Tocó el bajo en el grupo británico The Damned, casándose con Dave Vanian, el cantante, y abandonó el grupo en 2005 para cuidar de su hija.
Andrew Eldritch creó su propia discográfica, Merciful Records, firmando un contrato de distribución con la Warner Bros.
La banda fue formada por Gary Marx y Andrew Eldritch, ambos asiduos del F-club de Leeds, Inglaterra. El motivo era el deseo de ambos de escucharse a sí mismos en la radio.Durante esa época se estamparon camisetas de la banda y se grabó y lanzó un single, «Damage Done/Watch/Home of the Hit-men», con Gary Marx a la guitarra y Eldritch como batería.
El nombre de la banda estaba influenciado por la película de Robert Altman «McCabe & Mrs. Miller» (1971), que incluía la canción de Leonard Cohen del mismo nombre.

deathstar461, I think your argument is fundamentally flawed. to become "the gothic G'n'R," at first you have to be "gothic," or at least not to have a problem with it if having been labelled so. then you have to become mainstream and show eagerness to sustain this popularity via mass media. and then have to feel "an irrational hatred for former bandmates," which has never been the case of Eldritch I believe, who rationally explains the reasons why hatred if there's any hatred.
