The Polyphonic Spree es un grupo de pop sinfónico con dos docenas de componentes ataviados con largas túnicas blancas y que son todo un espectáculo en directo. Llevan un mensaje musical positivo y vitalista. Los fans les han comparado con The Flaming Lips y The Beach Boys, con un punto gospel.
Fueron fundados por Tim DeLaughter, líder de Tripping Daisy, cuando en 1999 una sobredosis se llevó a un compañero de grupo, al guitarrista Wes Berggren. Entonces Tripping Daisy terminó, y Tim, junto con el resto de supervivientes de Tripping Daisy, creó The Polyphonic Spree, grupo al que añadió 20 componentes más. Grabaron una maqueta titulada «The Beginning Stages of… The Polyphonic Spree» y la fueron pasando a los fans. Al poco tiempo, un sello indie de Dallas, Good Records, convirtió esa demo en todo un álbum de debut de la fenomenal banda.

It was around 3 years ago that I was first exposed to the Polyphonic Spree. The allure of their overall positive aura is what captivated me, and I bought into it all. "LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!" the masses at Lollapalooza chanted. A group of 23 people came out on stage dressed in white cloaks. I was enthralled, and felt an incredible calm overpower me, as people jumped and screamed while the band performed their cover of Lithium. I bought into this for a good few months, the flutes, the french horns, the xylophones, the optimism. Then I realized that Tim DeLaughter was no more than a happier version of Jim Jones, and if I kept any interest in this band, I'd find myself being forced to wear a white robe while screaming about "THE ELECTRIC SHOW", and downing a glass of spiked kool-aid. I have been clean for a few years now, and now listen to music that makes me want to lay down and never get up. I can't even show how happy I am.
