The Matches es una banda de rock formada en 1997. Originaria de Oakland, California se encuentra actualmente bajo el sello discográfico Epitaph Records.
Originalmente llamados «The Locals», el grupo fue formado por Justin San Souci, Matt Whalen, Matt Esposito, y Shawn Harris cuando todos aun cursaban la preparatoria. Matt Esposito dejo la banda y fue reemplazado por Jon Devoto como guitarrista. En sus primeros años, el grupo se caracterizo por tocar punk con influencias de ska.
Gradualmente, su estilo fue cambiando más hacia el rock alternativo. Sus influencias incluían grupos de pop-punk/punk como Green Day o Rancid, al igual que bandas y músicos mas populares como Elvis Costello, David Bowie, The Who y Joe Jackson.
El nombre «The Locals» pronto llevo a problemas sobre derechos de autor cuando Yvonne Doll, la líder de una banda de indie rock de Chicago también llamada «The Locals», contacto al grupo pidiéndoles que cambiaran el nombre.
Eventualmente, bajo el nuevo nombre «The Matches», lanzaron su álbum debut, E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals (esto fue tomado como un esfuerzo para públicamente insultar a Yvonne Doll y al mismo tiempo evitar una demanda por difamación).
Poco tiempo después firmaron un contrato con el sello Epitaph Records. Aunque ya habían antes lanzado el disco E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals sin tener un contrato, Epitaph decidio relanzarlo.
