The Jesus and Mary Chain es una banda formada en Glasgow, Escocia de rock alternativo e incluida en el movimiento shoegazing principalmente por la gran influencia en el sonido de las bandas posteriores. Formada por los hermanos Jim y William Reid, además de una sucesión de colaboradores fugaces entre los que destacan Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) y John Moore (Revolution 9). Procedentes de East Kilbride en Escocia, publicaron una constante cadena de álbumes, sencillos y EPs desde su formación en 1984 hasta su desaparición en 1999. En 2007 la banda se volvio a reunir y anunciaron su trabajo en un nuevo álbum.
The Jesus and Mary Chain originalmente revolucionó sobre la paridad en la escritura de canciones por los dos miembros principales. Para completar la visión de la banda, los hermanos Reid reclutaron al bajista Douglas Hart y al batería Murray Dalgish. La banda grabó su sencillo de debut, «Upside down», publicado en octubre de 1984 por Creation Records. Dalglish fue reemplazado poco después por Bobby Gillespie (quién seguiría como cabeza de Primal Scream) y William Reid afirmó posteriormente que había tocado la batería en el sencillo de debut él mismo debido a la problemas de habilidad que tenía Dalglish. Aunque el sencillo recibió un aclamo universal por parte de la crítica británica, y la banda fue lanzada por el New Musical Express, fueron sus primeros conciertos los que hicieron que la gente les prestase atención.
