The Jesus Lizard fue una banda de rock muy ruidoso e intenso creada en 1987 en la ciudad de Chicago, Illinois en los Estados Unidos. Tras la separación del grupo Scratch Acid, el cantante, David Yow, se estableció en Chicago donde conoció al guitarrista Duane Denison. En un inicio David Yow estaba a cargo del bajo, pero debido a su poca habilidad con el instrumento optaron por reclutar al también ex-Scratch Acid, David Wm. Sims.
Hasta ese momento no tenían baterista, por lo que el puesto estaba a cargo de una caja de ritmos. El trió se autonombró The Jesus Lizard, y después de grabar su primer EP Pure con la caja de ritmos, integraron al baterista Mac McNeilly formalmente a la banda.
