Formado en 1978, el grupo originalmente integraba a Belinda Carlisle (vocales), Jane Wiedlin (guitarra, vocales), Charlotte Caffey ( guitarra principal, teclados), Margot Olaverra (bajo), y Elissa Bello (batería). Empezaron tocando punk rock en clubes nocturnos tales comoThe Masque y el Whisky A Go Go en Los Angeles. En 1979, Gina Schock remplazó a Bello en la batería. Durante ese año, la banda grabó un demo y apoyó al grupo británico «Madness» tanto en los Angeles como en Inglaterra. The Go-Go’s gastaron medio año de 1980 en gira en Inglaterra, y lanzaron el sencillo «We Got the Beat» en Stiff Records.
En Diciembre de 1980, la bajista Margot Olaverra fue remplazada por Kathy Valentine, quien tocaba la guitarra en bandas tales como Girlschool y Textones (Valentine no tenía experiencia previa tocando el bajo y aprendió en cuatro días). The Go-Go’s firmaron con IRS Records en Abril de 1981. Su álbum debut Beauty and the Beat fue una sorpresa ya que llego al tope de las listas de popularidad en seis semanas. «Our Lips Are Sealed» y una nueva versión de «We Got the Beat» fueron extremadamente populares a principios de 1982. El siguiente álbum Vacation, se vendió muy bien, pero en ese año Gina Schock tuvo una operación quirúrgica debido a un defecto congénito del corazón. En 1984 Martin Rushent produjo el álbum Talk Show, pero las ventas fueron pobres. Conflictos personales y diferencias creativas fueron erosionando las relaciones del grupo, y Jane Wiedlin anuncio su salida del grupo en Octubre de 1984.

I was probably more amazed at how talented they were - people tend to associate them with vapid pop, but this is good stuff. Oh, yeah, and I'm in love with all of them, trainwreck-y as they seem to have been. Well, Jane Wiedlin still is.

Slinky Vagabond features Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, Clem Burke of Blondie, and Earl Slick (David Bowie's guitarist) and singer Keanan Duffty. Slinky Vagabond made their debut in May 2007 at Irving Plaza as part of Joey Ramone's annual birthday bash. Slinky Vagabond also performed for Gen Art during New York fashion week and at the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp

also, check out the cover version of "How Much More" that Redd Kross does; the singer of Redd Kross is married to Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go's. It's from an album called "Freedom of Choice" you can hear on LastFM- it's a compilation album of bands covering great 1980's songs. It was from late '90's, and the proceeds went to PlannedParenthood (freedom of Choice, get it- ha ha!) It's a good record- alot better then I'm making it sound here! Bands like Sonic Youth (i swear,do they play on Every Tribute Album ever made?), Yo La Tengo and i can't remember who else play Blondie, Devo, etc. There's a great cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" re-invented as a new-wave powerpop tune w/ a call-and-response style chorus that is so catchy & innovative! i've put it on mixes that i've given to friends.We worship Kate's original song, of course, but this cover always makes me laugh, even as it annoyingly gets stuck in my head for days after i listen to it! O yeah,I love the GG's "This Town"
