Oss (Holanda) (1989 – presente)

Se formó en 1989 en la localidad de Oss (Holanda), por los hermanos Hans Rutten y René Rutten, junto a Bart Smiths con la intención de crear una nueva banda. Por consecuencia se sumaron Hugo Prinsen Geerligs, Jelmer Wiersma y Frank Boeijen que aportaron cada uno una cuota muy importante dentro de la formación. Su primer trabajo musical fue An Imaginary Symphony el disco origen del grupo que los llevó a hacerse conocidos dentro de su ciudad natal.

Poco a poco comenzaron a haber cambios en el grupo, entre ellos, fue integrada Marike Groot (en voz, para el disco Always de 1992), Martine Van Loon y Niels Duffhues (También en voz en el disco Almost a Dance de 1993) tras la partida de Bart.

Tiempo después decidieron audicionar para el puesto de vocalista del grupo, debido que Niels, vocalista procedente del punk, no llenaba las espectativas del grupo. Fue ahí cuando Anneke van Giersbergen, una joven de 22 años con grandes dotes musicales fue elegida para ser la nueva vocalista del grupo. En 1995 Grabaron Mandylion, el primer disco de la nueva era de The Gathering que sería un nuevo, y a la vez exitoso, punto de partida.

The Gathering en 1997 grabó el disco Nighttime Birds entre un arduo período de estudio y de giras para llevar a cabo los conciertos por Holanda. How to Measure a Planet? fue el disco doble grabado en el año 1998, que posee un concepto variado y experimental (que la propia Anneke denomina trip-rock) de mucho valor para la evolución de la banda.

Thing is though, someone who cant get a job due to economy etc. cant afford to go to france to see a band, when they spend xmas and birthday money on gigs. I really dont see how coming here would cause any negative effects

Agreed. Fans of The Gathering over here in the UK are fairly rare, but not completely impossible to find (I know at least two other people who would go and see them if they played here). Perhaps we should all send them a letter asking them to come over here or something. I'm sure they'd do it if they thought they would get a good audience.

It's not as if nobody if the UK buys an album by The Gathering, or that they don't have a solid fanbase here. There are Brits willing to travel overseas to see them live. That's support. Smaller bands with smaller fanbases have come to the UK and played smaller venues, it's not our fault the promoter sucked. D: Someone should start a "BRING THE GATHERING TO THE UK" campaign.
