Most underrated album without a doubt.... Except Give it to me the rest is pretty flawless. Almost a solo album from Mr Smith....it's the Cure at their most psychedelic, unique sound! A must have

This album lends itself very well to multiple listens. This is The Cure's wildest, messiest, most psychedelic album. Not one of their best, but there's a lot of brilliant stuff happening on this record. [3]

One of the weirdest cases of "underrated".

hmm yes I see your point. Those three you mentioned are among their best, as well as Pornography and Faith (IMO).. I guess I love this album because whenever I feel in a strange mood I can relate so well to the whole of it. Robert's a genious for having created all those wonderful albums.

Your points are reasonable, sir, but I still stick to my original post. I didn't call those "who happen to like" this album "pretentious". But considering the 13 studio albums The Cure have released so far, I think it is pretty pretentious (or overestimating, at best) to position this album as highly as "The Head on the Door", "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" and "Disintegration". Of course, it is quite possible that one can claim "Love's Labour's Lost" is a better play than "Hamlet" or "King Lear"; but one must be taking everything too lowly to take this claim seriously.

Disagree completely. While it might seem super odd compared to their other releases, all the songs in here capture a very special psychedelia, a sense of self-loathing combined with extreme insanity and delusion while being aware and proud of it. That's what makes this record special, you either get it or you don't, but don't call pretentious those who happen to like it. It is a very strong, angry and dense record theme-wise, which doesn't make it very friendly. Very well pieced together and not a single song feels out of place or like a filler.

I think people who say this album is one of the best of The Cure are plain pretentious. At best, this record can be renamed "The Hitchiker's Guide to Siouxsie & the Banshees", and it's still something no doubt. In any case a below-average The Cure album is a decent album overall.

probably their most underrated album. its just brilliant, as lotsajoy wrote, it is indeed a shame Robert didn't explore this kind of sound any further
