The Brand New Heavies es un trío británico compuesto por Simon Bartholomew (guitarra), Jan Kincaid (batería, teclados) y Andrew Levy (bajo). Son uno de los referents del acid jazz y, junto a Incognito, la formación más popular. En su discografía se encuentran algunos de los que se consideran los mejores álbumes del estilo y buena parte de los imprescindibles, los que todo amante del acid jazz debería escuchar para comprender su evolución y su importancia en la historia de la música negra: son los pioneros del acid jazz londinense, una de las escenas más importantes e influyentes.
Su música es una fusión de funk, jazz, soul, disco, hip hop y r&b, reinterpretándola a través de la incorporación de elementos dance de finales de los noventa, obteniendo así un acid jazz elegante, brillante y sofisticado. En términos generales, todos los que se interesen por la música negra conocen y/o adoran los discos de la formación británica, que muy posiblemente sea una de las más importantes de los noventa (y una de las que más ha influido a los artistas de la presente década).
Simon, Jan y Andrew se hicieron amigos en la escuela de Ealing, un suburbio de Londrés, pues ambos compartían una pasión casi obsesiva por el soul y el funk de los 70. Coleccionistas de discos, acudían habitualmente a los clubs de rare grooves, dónde escuchaban temas de James Brown, The Meters, The Crusaders, Mass Production, Rufus… Ya en la adolescencia, el trío se reunía en la casa de Jan para grabar sus primeras cintas, que les valieron sus primeros seguidores al ser pinchadas en las influyentes sesiones del club Cat in the hat.

BNH had some decent grooves but they could never touch Jamiroquai. Something about the BNH groove always sounded studied while JK's funk was organic. I will say that BNH have the best remixes though! See David Morales' take on Stay This Way, Kenny Dope's version of I Don't Know Why I Love You, MAW's mix of Close To You and Dilla + MAW's mix of Sometimes. Pure heat that demolish the decidely tepid original versions!
