El grupo de post-punk The Birthday Party se formó en Melbourne en 1977 con el nombre de The Boys Next Door. Tras editar dos álbumes en Australia, la banda en torno al vocalista Nick Cave se trasladó a Londres y se cambió de nombre. Su debut internacional, “Prayers On Fire”, recibió muy buenas críticas e hizo llegar a un público más amplio su tipo de rock deprimente adornado por las historias de Cave sobre perversiones y problemas religiosos. Tras el álbum de 1982 “Junkyard” se trasladaron a Alemania, donde trabajaron con artistas alternativos/post-punk locales hasta que se separaron en 1984.
