The Angels of Light son un grupo experimental de rock-folk que fue formado aproximadamente en 1998 por el vocalista/guitarrista Michael Gira luego de la disolución de Swans, el grupo que fundo en 1982. La banda ha marcado un estilo diferente y particular a Gira desde que abandono Swans, entre lo más notorio se percibe un sonido más melodico y menos brutal que en sus trabajos previos.

The Angels of light contiene muchas colaboraciones Neoyorquinas incluyendo a Dana Schechter de Bee and Flower, Kid Congo Powers de The Cramps, Larry Mullins también conocido como Toby Dammit, Bliss Blood de The Moonlighters, Thor Harris de Shearwater, y los mas recientes la banda de Brooklyn Akron/Family como también el ex-guitarrista de Swans Christoph Hahn. Todos los albumes de Angels of Light han sido lanzados bajo el sello discográfico de Michael Gira Young God Records.

Antes del la formación de la banda Gira intento llamar a su proyecto acustico paralelo a Swans, The Pleasure Seekers, pero el nombre fue descartado ya que existia un grupo en los sesentas con el mismo nombre. Las primeras dos presentaciones en vivo de lo que se convertiria en The Angels of Light fueron presentadas como «Michael Gira con invitados»

I also just ordered We Are Him. Each one's signed? Today just got a whole lot better :-D. The Youtube video of "Promise of Water" has an amazing picture on it. Combined with the song it haunted my head for some time...
