Trent D’Arby nace en Nueva York en 1962. En 1987 sale a la luz acompañado por una gran campaña publicitaria, siendo su disco debut el mejor y más impresionante y con la mejor cobertura desde Sgt. Pepper.
Su increíble arrogancia le creó varios problemas en U.K., que curiosamente el lugar donde se forjó la leyenda Terence, con lo que tuvo que volver durante una temporada a América.
Durante los años 80s Terence Trent D’Arby fue soldado para los EE.UU. Trasladado a Alemania, comienza a sumergirse en el mundo de la música creando una banda de funk que respondía al nombre de Touch. Tras dejar la armada se traslada a Londres donde firma su primer contrato con la casa discográfica CBS. El primer single que sale a la calle de D’Arby’s es «If You Let Me Stay» que, como un cohete, ascendió a los Top Ten de las listas. Este single se incluía en el álbum Introducing the Hardline According to Terence. El disco también escaló las listas hasta llegar a la cima, y manteniéndose cerca de un año entre los más vendidos.
El éxito de U.K. no fue respaldado en EE.UU. hasta 1988, año en el que una de sus canciones más funkys «Wishing Well» alcanza el número uno. La balada «Sign Your Name» se coloca entre los cinco más vendidos y le reporta un total de dos millones copias colocadas.
