I'm having hosting issues.. mainly because I can't figure out
how this shit works. Google can only help so much. I'll figure it
out somehow--probably by asking someone who actually knows what
Remix update I'll being doing the posts soon. I picked about 16 songs out
of all the submissions that I thought were special. That said,
there's many I didn't include, but you guys are still awesome just
for having a creative passion.
For those of you who may or may not be aware of this
important LA DJ/Producer, Kutmah is one of the forefront figures in
the LA/worldwide music scene. He is currently at risk for
deportation and needs our help to keep him here with us.
Here's the information from
Dublab.com: Please sign the petition, it just requires your name and
email--wouldn't take longer than a minute.
Kutmah was born in
the UK to an Egyptian mother and Scottish father. He moved to the
US with his mother when he was 12 years old.
They immediately applied for residency to keep them from
being sent to Egypt. As a British citizen the court ruled that he
be able to live in the UK which in their eyes wasn't such a
bad place. They denied their application.
Kutmah and his Mom
returned to court to plead their case 14 years ago when Kutmah was
20. They were again denied a green card and
were urged to sign a document stating they would voluntary
leave the US. They ended up staying because this is home.
On Wednesday morning, May 5th armed agents entered
Kutmah's house and
detained him. He was brought to a facility in downtown LA where
he was interrogated. On Thursday he was moved to New Mexico.
His case will come up against the prosecutor very soon and he may
deportation. We need to show how important Kutmah is to the
LA and US community. Please write a letter and spread the word!
Please support Justin “Kutmah” McNulty in his deportation
He is facing immediate deportation unless we can reopen the case

I almost forgot about this, but when I was at the RBMA, they
asked us to submit a playlist/mix of songs. I chose to do a list of
songs that I found inspired me and my style. A few of these songs
I've used in other mixes, but that's mostly because of how much
they mean to me. I tend to do mixes based on what I'm REALLY
listening to at the moment. There are plenty of other people and
blogs posting up exclusive tracks, I really can't compete.

As far as the tracks I contributed, let's just say if you
play them in the car at just the right decibel, the driver next to
you might react in any number of ways. I won't go into details.
Here's Shingo's explanation of the title:
The Japanese title reads
400[yomi], which means afterlife. We used the character for
"yomi-gaeru," which means return from afterlife.
The English title will have 400[RVL], short for

NO MORE SUBMISSIONS PLS As I've been awake the latter half of this past week, I
haven't checked any of the songs, but I have them and I've been
archiving them in a folder to listen to. The sheer number of songs
frighten me, but I promise to listen to them.
What's the next step After I listen through the faves, I'll be doing doing a
series of entries (my regular always random ones) with a daily
segment streaming my favored versions. I'm assuming I'll be posting
2 or so streams with each post until I've posted anywhere from
12-18 tracks. Once I wind down and post up most of the songs, I'll
put together a little downloadable album with all the awesomeness.
Of course, I'll be including a few special remixes from a few
producer friends of mine that decided to freak the drunken rhodes.
The goal? When I choose and compile the remix album, I'm aiming so that
it doesn't seem like you're listening to the same song 18 times. A
variety of sound can come from the same sample source. Also, I'm
tending to favor the ones that don't just sound like a cut and
paste version of my drunk version--if you're sober, you can do
better than that :)
Ending note I've received so many more submissions than I could have ever
imagined and I thank everyone for their creativity and motivation.
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of songs, I hope you
understand I cannot post all of these and this isn't really about
technical skill more so than unique creative qualities. I'm in no
position to judge if you are good or bad, I'm solely just picking
MY favorites. If you like your version, please go ahead and unleash
it upon the public. So no butt hurt feelings, k? Keep grinderindin'
PS: The guys that won the sort of sort-of-a-contest part (being
included in the mixes) have been notified. Remember that they
submitted theirs within the 2 day time frame.
PS2: I'm not emailing anyone back!! I tried in the beginning..
just to let people know I received the emails, but now it's too
much. You will just have to trust that I listened to it and check
back to see if I featured yours.
PS3: DON'T SPAM MY EMAIL WITH UNSOLICITED MUSIC. PLEEEAASSEEE.
It's a prelude of many amazing things to come. All the tracks
you guys enjoy will be released at some point soon as well, so I
hope you stay posted with my releases. There is so much music you
have yet to hear from me :)
As far as retailers Your guess is as good as mine--google? Depending on where you
are from in the world, it's better to find a distributor in your
So I've received over 50 submissions so far. There were a few
stragglers at the end that didn't make it by midnight and I pushed
it for a couple, but I couldn't fit in the ones that came an hour
or more late. Basically, I narrowed down the tracks to a more
reasonable number and sent them to be voted upon by a team of ears
that I trust--you would trust them too if you knew who (but I won't
tell). It sorta stinks because a couple of the ones that were late
sound quite nice. Anywho, this is just regarding the tunes that
will be in my mixes.
For the rest that will be coming in, I will still need to do
a filtering process because posting up 5 albums worth of tracks
remixing the same song wouldn't be very fun for everyone to hear.
Instead, I'll probably choose the best albums-worth of songs
(anywhere from 12-20) of the really stand out tunes and post them
up for download and I'll stream the ones that really stick out.
Btw, it's really nice to see people flipping the samples to
make the song their own. I might even remix my own tune--I think
that would be kinda fun.. even though there's many other things I
should be working on. Bleh.
Remix / Redo /Sample / Re-edit - Almost Free So, elaborating on the last post with the drunken track, I
mentioned if anyone wanted to remix or redo the song. I have
already received a couple really great versions of the song, which
has propelled me to make this a bigger project. I have exported the
stems/loops in WAVs for anyone to use, sample, etc.
This is just a fun project--so don't worry about legalities
or weird shit like that. The only thing I ask is that I can post
your remix or re-do here and share it as a free download as well. I
think it would be fun to see what direction people will choose to
take. Also, if you flip it nice I think it would be a good look for
Note: I left the stems mostly dry, except the minor
delay/reverb that was on the rhodes when I was recording--can't
take that off... sorry.
REMEMBERRRR Email meyour
finished project--I'd really like to hear & share it.
SUBMISSION PORTION IS OVER
EDIT PRIZE??????????????????? So... I was thinking that I should have a prize or some
incentive, so I thought about what I could offer to other beat
makers. Well, I'm doing mixes for
Worldwide (gets syndicated in 12 countries worldwide), a
podcast mix for
URB.com (URB Magazine), and a mix
for feature in
Big Up Magazine. The top
3 or so that I think is really special could end up in one of each
of the mixes. 1st place can choose which of the three, 2nd place
can choose which of the remaining two, and 3rd gets the remaining.
Sounds cool right? The only thing is that I need the songs
before Monday to be able to include in the mixes. That doesn't mean
you can't keep working on the tunes--I'll still post them up. Maybe
I'll do my own little free release that has all the tracks people
submit, but even that will need a deadline too; I say April 25th.
Okayokay, the the bottom line is: need submissions by Sunday night in order to be considered for
the URB / Big Up / Gilles Peterson mix & need all submissions
for my site by the 25th.
