Armenia (1995 – 2006)
System of a Down (también conocido abreviadamente como System o por sus siglas, SOAD) es una banda de metal alternativo de ascendencia Armenia formada en Los Ángeles, en el año 1995. En un comienzo se llamaron Soil, pero luego adoptaron el nombre «System of a Down» inspirados por el poema Victims of a Down escrito por el guitarrista Daron Malakian. Son famosos por realizar canciones con líricas que mantienen una ideología en contra del maltrato infantil, la violencia, la guerra, la pornografía violenta y machista, el dominio del dinero sobre la sociedad, las diferencias sociales, físicas e ideológicas de cada ser humano, la intolerancia, la discriminación; entre otros, de los principales temas en los que ésta banda se muestra en contra.
Está compuesta por Serj Tankian (voz/teclado/ocasionalmente guitarra), Daron Malakian (guitarra/voz), Shavo Odadjian (bajo) y John Dolmayan (batería).
En sus cinco discos editados hasta la fecha, System of a Down usa una amplia gama de instrumentos, incluyendo guitarras eléctricas barítonas y hasta una botella vacía sirve de instrumento (en el tema Science, del Toxicity), mandolinas eléctricas, cítaras, guitarras clásicas de 12 cuerdas (Tiple), y otros instrumentos de Asia. Sus más notables influencias provienen de las bandas que empezaron con el rock alternativo. También tuvieron influencias de géneros como el heavy metal, jazz fusion, folk, hard rock, rock psicodélico, funk, rock clásico, blues e industrial.
