Swans es una influyente banda estadounidense de rock experimental, folk y post-industrial activa desde 1982, dirigida por el vocalista, compositor y multi-instrumentalista Michael Gira. Siendo uno de los primeros grupos emergentes de la escena neoyorquina de los ochenta, tuvo un constante cambio de músicos. Además de Gira, los otros semi-constantes miembros fueron la tecladista y vocalista Jarboe y el guitarrista Norman Westberg. Desde 1982 a 1985 Swans se conformó por Gira como vocalista y bajista, Jonathan Kane en la batería y Sue Hanel como guitarrista, la cual colaboro únicamente con la banda en la compilación “Body To Body, Job To Job”.
Hanel no estuvo mucho tiempo en el grupo y fue remplazada por Bob Pelozza. En este periodo de tiempo en la banda estuvo el saxofonista Daniel Galli-Duani. Su álbum debut “Swans” es notablemente diferente de cualquier trabajo posterior. La prensa lo catalogo como un ruido lento de guitarras estruendosas, y una gran palpitación de tambores, todo esto seguido por las mórbidas y violentas líricas de Gira.
Su primer lanzamiento oficial “Filth” (1983) fue el primero en el que el guitarrista Norman Webstern participó y después de este en todos los demás excepto en “Love of Life”. Su siguiente proyecto “Cop+Young God” (1984) continua con la misma línea musical que los anteriores con sonidos pesados extremadamente lentos. En uno de sus conciertos la banda estaba tocando a unos niveles de volumen tan extremadamente altos hasta inducir al vomito a algunos miembros de la audiencia y la policía cancelo el show, esto le dio una reputación al nombre Swans que contribuyo con la retirada de Gira de la banda.

I've got a problem with "Sex God Sex" on the new live disc too. It's fine in my CD player, but if I try to play it on my PC the second half of the track skips heavily. It doesn't look like there's anything wrong with the disc & the drive on my PC's normally fine. Anyone else? I guess it doesn't agree with some players...
