он не авангардный джазмен, его джаз - просто безумное восприятие джаза бытового, хорошо, что мода на его творчество подоспела вовремя

I've basically only listened to his later-era chillout fusion stuff. I'm such a lame fan of this guy. Great music to fall asleep to, though, gotta say.

@purifire: I just did, in relation to speculation about Sun Ra's beliefs. I mentioned it because it was something I wanted to underline. No one accused, nobody died. I'm glad I said it and I would do it all over again given an opportunity.

    Diciembre 2013
  • fergalmc

Whatever Sun Ra's changing opinions on race and race relations were over the course of his life, they can't be considered the equivalent or a mirror image of those held by white separatists and supremacists.

I didn't say: that is merely humor. But on the rest of what you just said I agree.

    Noviembre 2013
  • bschw

No doubt, it's humorous. But merely saying something like "Well, that's merely humor" is too simple. There's no dichotomy between humor and seriousness; they go hand in hand, especially when it comes to Sun Ra.

  • toztizokzndz

I think y'all are taking this way too literally and serious. It's Sun Ra! But since you are it also doesn't hurt to try to imagine living in Birmingham Alabama as black man in the first half of the 20th century. Also from an interview with Sun Ra: ''See, these white people understand.'' Anyway, to get Sun Ra you must have a sense of humor.

Yup, I had that wiki chapter and the quote from 1970 in the back of my mind all the time, too. That's why I was so surprised when I saw SpaceisThePlace which is from 74 and that interview I linked to, which is, I guess, also from after 1970. Also given that Sun Ra explicitly stated that he used to think that whites were to blame for "EVERYTHING", it is at least questionable when John Szwed states that Sun Ra changed "drastically". Sure, people do change, but usually they change gradually and modify their old beliefs, they don't change 100% - so it would only make sense if he retained his old beliefs to a certain extent. Also SunRa was born in the 1910s in the segregated south. Racism at that time was the norm among educated people and I guess among lesser educated, too. So it wouldn't be surprising if Sun Ra would in some sense hold "racist" beliefs. I think the evidence Swzed give's for Sun Ra's drastic change is a bit thin. I'd guess Ra'd be"somewhere in the middle. WELL, WHO KNOWS?

Well, for instance around the 8:00 mark Sun Ra says: "White people are different, you see, they're entirely different beings. God made them like that. They're in a particularly ignorant state." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNgwzY0KzlM) The remark is striking because in the movie Space is the Place some white characters, more or less explicitly, ask Sun Ra to be saved, but in the movie Sun Ra rejects to save them, because they're white. It's obvious that Sun Ra doesn't define race strictly in terms of 'DNA' or 'material' characteristics - because he claims blacks can loose their so to speak 'inner, spiritual' blackness and so on- but well: There's enough material which suggests he considers whites as inferior beings. ... So it's interesting to see if he played with any other whites besides John Cage.

  • toztizokzndz

    What interviews?

    Noviembre 2013
  • bschw

Did Sun Ra play with any white musician besides John Cage? (The question comes to my mind since every white person in the movie Space is the Place is more or less an 'evil' character and since in some interviews Sun Ra seems to suggest that whites are a ('spiritually') inferior race. But then again, who knows how to decipher his 'equations'?)

I don't think he has representative albums. Compilations - probably but albums I don't think so. Though there are albums that represent certain eras of the bands history very well.

Wouldn't Space is the Place be the most representative album? You've got plenty of abrasiveness there with a bit of swing thrown in as well.
